When we eat at a restaurant, we are effectively putting our diet in the hands of a stranger. While it is true that most chefs are quite professional, and wouldn’t do anything, what about the rest. Not all of us are savvy enough to notice what is present in our food. On the other hand, there are people in the service industry who wouldn’t mind going out of their way to help someone. The stories of such individuals can be quite a harsh pill to swallow for those who believe the youth of today to be misguided. Especially in the case of 18-year-old Evoni Williams, whose selfless nature was made a photo of by a client.
A Photo Can Change Your Life- So choose Your Moments To Shine
This photo was then shown to the customer was dealing with. To put things in context, Williams had noticed that an elderly individual had stepped into the restaurant. The elderly man was clearly struggling- with an oxygen tank attached. Seeing him fret around with his food- trying to cut it- Williams decided to step in. Laura Wolf, the patron who took the photo, states, “Without hesitation, she took his plate and began cutting up his ham.” Needless to say, such a selfless action in the service industry is quite unheard of. Precisely why she decided to upload it on Facebook. Here’s the photo:

Talking about the incident, Williams spoke about Adrien, the old man who clearly had struggles trying to eat his food:
“He was like, ‘My hands are not functioning too well.’ He needed me to cut his food. And I did.” The 78-year-old Adrien confirmed this. “My hands are not up to par. If I want to cut my meat, I look like I’m stabbing it.” When Laura Wolf took the photo, neither Williams nor Adrien had any idea about it.
Laura Wolf continued, “This may seem small, but to him, I’m sure it was huge. I’m thankful to have seen this act of kindness and caring at the start of my day while everything in this world seems so negative.” Evoni Williams believes that the photo made her day. As it stands, just a week after this incident, the picture went absolutely viral.
The City of La Marque rewarded this kind gesture by Evoni Williams with a sweet surprise of their own. Williams stated, “I got my own day.” And we really don’t have to mention how big a deal that is. A teenager having her own day in the calendar- one that is not her birthday- would be a big thing for anyone.

Decency For Decency’s Sake
But that isn’t all. While the photo did catapult her to popularity, that wasn’t all to it. The Texas Southern University also provided her with a scholarship of $16,000. Despite all the fame that she has been receiving, Evoni Williams still claims that she did nothing special. And interestingly, from an objective standpoint, what she did was absolutely normal.
With the world today being so fast, humility and kindness are foregone issues. We barely have time for ourselves- to actually look out for others. And we may never know when our actions can be life-changing for us. After all, did Evoni Williams think that her selfless action would go viral on Facebook? Speaking to the Houston Chronicle, Williams stated, “I didn’t know the photo was taken until a couple of hours later.”
What does seem to be quite an irony is that despite the popularity, she still thinks that her actions were normal. And they were. Decency and courtesy shouldn’t be compromised under any circumstance. It becomes even more important for people working in the service industry. Why? For they spend their lives dealing with other individuals. So, why not try being helpful? Who knows, you may get a photo and a day out of it?
