‘He didn’t ask me my age’: Customer Says She Automatically Received a Senior Discount at Ross Dress for Less

A TikTok user by the name of Jennifer (@gigi_dolleyes), shared a video in which she complained about being mistaken for a 55-year-old woman. Every Tuesday Ross offers a 10% discount to seniors aged 55 and up. She said the cashier didn’t even ask her age; he just automatically gave her the senior’s discount.

Prematurely, Getting a Senior’s Discount

Jennifer said that she was in a hurry, so she didn’t think anything of it at first. She was in route to pick up her daughter but stopped to do a quick shopping trip on the way. However, when she got to the car, she took a second look at the receipt. She then realized that she’d saved $7.50, due to the senior’s discount.

She said she wasn’t unhappy about the savings but did take some offense about the cashier’s assumption. “He gave me the 55-plus Tuesday discount. 10%,” she says in the clip. “I mean I’m not mad at it because hey, that’s $7.50 that I didn’t have to pay, but… he didn’t ask me my age.” Jennifer shared in her video.

Asking User’s about the Senior’s Discount

It is said that people shouldn’t ask questions they don’t want the answers to. Seeing as she got many responses that she likely didn’t want, that cliche’ statement is one that Jennifer probably should have taken into account. She turned to TikTok in regard to the senior’s discount, asking followers if she looks 55.

Yes. I’m sorry.”Yes, you do. My mom is 62 and you look older than her.” “Yes, you definitely look at least 55 😂 Don’t flatter yourself 😂” were some of the responses to Jennifer’s video. Another follower said, “I am a cashier, and we are not allowed to ask customers their age!!! It’s against the store’s policy!!! Who cares, what is wrong with 55?” Meanwhile another follower found some humor in her dissatisfaction stating, “My mom was happy when this happened to her. She loved the discount at Ross and the senior menu at Ihop lol.”

Minding Your Manners

Many of us were taught, while growing up, that it’s rude to ask a woman her age. With this in mind, as well as the stores policy, it makes sense that things unfolded the way they did. The cashier isn’t supposed to ask customers their age. As a result, he gave her the senior’s discount probably feeling like he did the right thing.

Youthful Obsession

AHS depicts Madame Delphine LaLaurie, using the blood of her slaves to keep her youthful glow intact. Explorers sought out the Fountain of Youth. Make up and skin care brands advertise that their products help keep hair and skin healthy, supple, and youthful. For centuries people have felt a strong urge to fight off aging, and some have even sought out ways to ensure eternal life. However, aging is inevitable for everyone, and many celebrities have decided to go against these “traditional” societal norms.

New Trends

Dying hair to avoid qualifying for the senior’s discount, look youthful for longer, and keep up with beauty trends has always been pretty common. Alternatively, these trends have had damaging effects. Hair becomes dry, brittle, and unhealthy. Additionally, beauty trends take up time, are costly and cause self-esteem issues that may impact one’s mental health. Women like Jamie Lee Curtis and Jane Fonda have decided to “speak out” about ageism by allowing their natural grays to take over. They’ve ditched the hair dye” for a more natural look.

Reasons to Celebrate Aging

There are certain other benefits associated with aging including, senior’s discounts, financial or medical assistance, and finally coming into a place in life with unwavering confidence and happiness. The Senior List is a website that provides seniors with advice, resources, and companies that offer senior’s discounts. Their mission is to celebrate the aging process and help those in this phase get the things they need from life.
