This Puzzling Optical Illusion Is Confusing So Many Viewers! Can You Solve It?

There is an optical illusion going around right now that is stumping everyone who looks at it. We have shown this image to several people and the results are always the same – confusion. Do you think you can solve this tricky visual challenge?

To understand optical illusions and why they are so hard to figure out, we did some digging. It turns out there are three types of optical illusions: cognitive, literal, and physiological. The type we are looking at today is the latter- physiological.

According to the New York Museum of Illusions, “When your eyes are exposed to factors such as brightness, tilt, or movement for an extended period of time, this is when physiological illusions occur. Once you look away from the brightness, movement, or tilt, you will still experience it to a degree. Your brain will fill in the gaps of what it thinks should be there. This experience is called ‘afterimage.'” They go on to say, “Physiological illusions take advantage of this afterimage to make it appear as if something is or isn’t there.“

We know this is a difficult one for your brain to process. If we take a look at how Reader’s Digest explains optical illusions, maybe we will find the answer more easily.

“Optical illusions are visuals that tend to be deceptive to the eye and brain. This is based on numerous factors including varying colors, patterns, lights, and more! When looking at these images what we see gets sent to our brains, and a false perception is created as the image our brain processes isn’t actually what is in front of us. Different people will often see these illusions differently which is completely normal since everyone’s brain works in different ways”
