10 Times People had to Choose their Pet Over Their Partners and How It Went

In April 2021, a Reddit user by the name u/sugar-soad posed the question, “People who were made to choose between your pet or your partner, how did your ex react when you chose your pet?” The thread ran rampant with responses. Here are some of the best ones we have found, plus one extra you should like. Enjoy the laughs!

1. “She is my soulmate and I would die for her.”

This woman had to deal with an abusive husband. It was enough for her to persevere through when he was abusing her, but he made a big mistake when he shouted at and kicked her little dog.

“My ex husband was a constant cheat, terribly abusive, and loved to destroy anything I owned in order to punish and control me. I put up with anything and everything for over two years because “I loved him”. The last time I ever saw him he yelled at/hit my dog. I instantly packed my car and dog and left. Immediately filed for divorce. Haven’t seen him since.”

2. He “pretended to not be severely allergic to cats

Here is a weird one. This guy hid his severe cat allergy from his girlfriend so that she would eventually choose him and get rid of the cat… little did he know…

“I briefly dated a guy who pretended to not be severely allergic to cats. He came over for the first time doped up on Benadryl and I confronted him about it, and he tearfully told me he hoped to keep his allergy a secret long enough for me to fall for him and choose him over my cat.

“And that this was a repeat strategy for him.

“I laughed so hard (poor confused guy) and told him the only winning move was not to play. I happily never saw him again.”

3. “I convinced my in-laws to let me bring him

Here is a little rat who was so loved by his owner, but her in-laws did not share her fondness.

“I have an elderly rat (going on four years, which is quite the feat for a rat). I’ve raised him since he was a baby with his brother, who passed away two winters ago. When we moved in with my in-laws over the summer, they didn’t want me to bring my rat. I straight up told my partner that I’ll live somewhere else for awhile (we’d been living together for almost three years at that point) because my rat is my responsibility, he’s very old, and that I was going to see him through to the end. They were a little upset and accused me of choosing the rat over them, but I explained that he’s an animal that relies on us. It worked out, I convinced my in-laws to let me bring him, and we’re all still kickin. He’s on his last days and I’m glad I’m here with him. He’ll be buried with his brother when it’s time.”

4. “He was gone 3 weeks after that. The cat had 3 more wonderful years”

One boyfriend doubted his girlfriend’s capabilities to care for her elderly cat. He was pretty sure that she should put him down, but she disagreed. He was frail and thin, but according to his blood tests and vet visits, he had a clean bill of health, and there was no reason to put him down. Yet, her partner kept passing comments, and he: “Even went so far as to stop by a vet and pick up cremation pamphlets so I could shop for urns.” Which is a bit drastic.

Her response to his comments was: “the next time you mention me putting my cat to sleep or implying I’m not doing right by him make sure your bags are packed.”

According to her post, he was gone three weeks later.

5. “I was told they hated my dog

This guy was convinced that if you just got to know his dog, you couldn’t help but love the dog. They tried, but it failed…

“This was a long time ago but I just started dating this person and I was told they hated my dog, it was a bit of a shock but I was like no biggie just get to know my dog and you will fall in love with him.

So the next time, we had a doggie date and HE TRIED TO KICK MY DOG. I literally grabbed my dog and turned around and walked away. And that was that!!!”

6. “He wanted a dog instead.

This person would not stand for such manipulation.

“He wanted me to rehome my cat because he wanted a dog instead. We were not living together, and I’m allergic to dogs. That didn’t matter, HE wanted me to have one, so he demanded I rehome the cat. I rehomed him instead. The look on his face when I took him to his mother’s house was pretty priceless.”

7. “Butters is still making quality biscuits at my side

Toxic relationships can often get the better of us.  The best thing is to remember who you are, and what you want from your life. For this person, it was her cat, Butters.

“I had an incredibly toxic boyfriend who had at one point paid the fee for a rescue cat for me for my birthday. the cat REALLY didnt like him, she wasnt aggressive she was just skittish and didnt want to be around him. We had gotten into a fight earlier that day about something unrelated and he decided to start ranting about the cat and how he believed we should get rid of her, that she was a bad animal JUST because she was skittish ( she was a rescue!! and a very loving one at that if you let her come to you when she felt safe ).

“He started to threaten to leave her at the humane society or get rid of her when i wasnt around so I couldn”t stop him. I told him to get out of my house and immediately broke up with him. Butters is still making quality biscuits at my side and loves to take naps with me :)”

8. “He told me it was my loss. I was ok with that.”

A chihuahua, an outside dog? Never!

“I had a boyfriend I dated for a few months and things were starting to get serious. One day he said “you know if we ever move in together your dog will have to be an outside dog. Dogs aren’t meant to be inside.” My dog was a 7pound chihuahua. I told him if he was not willing to change his mind we would not be moving forward with us. He told me it was my loss. I was ok with that. After that, I would try and find excuses for my pup and the potential to meet before. When I met my now-husband he told me he did not like small dogs. He met my pup and fell in love. Sadly she passed away two years ago but he just celebrated 12 years ago. I hope the other guy found someone good for him.”

9. “I bred tarantulas professionally for a few years”

This person was a tarantula breeder by profession. Though she was always clear about the fact that spiders would be found inside her house, it was not an issue if this was a deal-breaker for her relationships.

“I dated this one guy for a few months, but we’d always go out or to him. I didn’t really think much of it. Around month 4, he started getting annoyed and one day, straight up asked me how long it was gonna take to “sell a few spiders.”

When his partner came home, he was angry that there were still spiders in the house. Her response was: “you really thought I was gonna give up my job for you?”

10. “My girlfriend does not like my beagle Molly. SO I have to rehome her.

This is story is a little on the older side, and it went viral back in 2015, but trust us, it’s just as hilarious today as it was back then. It goes a little something like this.

Upon moving in with his girlfriend, he faced a serious problem. His girlfriend wanted the beagle to go, so much so, that she forced him to choose between them. Her, or the beagle, he must decide. After giving it a bit of thought, he took to craigslist under the username Roanoke to make an advertisement that surprised many people.

His now-deleted Craigslist ad read as follows:

“She is a purebred from a wealthy area and I have had her for 4 years. She likes to play games. Not totally trained. Has long hair so she’s a little high maintenance, especially the nails, but she loves having them done.

Stays up all night yapping but sleeps while I work. Only eats the best, most expensive food. Will NEVER greet you at the door after a long day or give you unconditional love when you’re down. Does not bite but she can be mean as hell!”

No one expected the ending, “So…anyone interested in my 30-year-old, selfish, wicked, gold-digging girlfriend? Come and get her! Me and my dog want her rehomed ASAP!!”

Surprise, surprise, he ended up keeping his dog. If his girlfriend could not deal with it and left him, we hope from now on that his future partners understand that he comes as a package deal, him and his beagle.

As far as our opinion counts, we think he made the superior decision! No dog should ever be abandoned, they are filled with so much unconditional love to give. Later on, the craigslist listing was updated with this message:

“Sorry but she has been re-homed, her original breeders (Her Parents) have taken her back home* Molly & I are looking for a new one ☺”
