Lady Gaga is famous for her outrageously unique fashion style. In a time where originality seems impossible to achieve, she managed to shock the world into seeing something they’ve never quite seen before, time and time again. If you thought her meat dress was unconventional, wait till you see how she showed up to her performance at the Oscars. She ditched the glitz and glam for a neutral look with no makeup, wearing a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers.
A Change of Heart
For the most part, Lady Gaga can be expected to bring an element of surprise into her fashion styles. She likes to portray herself in ways that are not only eye-catching but mind-bending too. In 2010, the fashionista and singer-songwriter wore a dress designed by Franc Fernandez that was made entirely of raw meat. The ensemble resembled a mini cocktail dress, complete with a hat.
This year at the Oscars, Lady Gaga left the audience in awe over her choice of outfit for her performance. Her song, “Hold My Hand,” from the movie Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for the most original song written for a motion picture. At first, Lady Gaga announced that she wasn’t able to attend the awards ceremony because she was currently filming Folie à Deux, the sequel to the Joker film.
“After a bunch of back-and-forths, it didn’t feel like she can get a performance to the caliber that we’re used to with her, that she’s used to, so she is not going to perform on the show,” said Glenn Weiss, the executive producer and showrunner of the Oscars. “She is in the middle of shooting a movie right now, and here we are, honoring the movie industry and what it takes to make a movie.”

Lady Gaga, a Performance in a Performance
Three days before the event commenced, Lady Gaga had a change of heart. She messaged the organizers to add a last-minute performance. She didn’t have the time to create anything elaborate, which everyone expects of her. But, she did have something in mind. The now beige red carpet (a new concept that started this year) saw Lady Gaga adorned in a black Versace gown and a full face of bold makeup. The dress has a sheer bodice with long sleeves and a low-sitting skirt.

Once inside, Lady Gaga went backstage to get ready for her performance. There, she wiped her face clean of any makeup and took off her Versace gown. Instead of changing into something even more elaborate, she did the opposite. Lady Gaga took to the stage wearing black jeans, a black T-shirt, and sneakers. Her hair was styled in a french braid and she had not a stitch of makeup on her face. Her producers said her intention was “for people to see the real Gaga.” She wanted it to be “raw and real.”

The song that Lady Gaga performed at the Oscas was written for Top Gun: Maverick, the motion picture. The song is about how we crave support from our loved ones in life. It holds a lot of meaning to the singer and has had a great impact on the world. Lady Gaga opened up about the song and explained how sometimes we can be our own heroes when external support is hard to come by. “It’s deeply personal for me. I think we all need each other. We need a lot of love to walk through this life. And we all need a hero sometimes. But you might find that you can be your own hero, even if you feel broken instead.”
The Oscars is typically a lavish affair where celebrities show off their favorite designer’s latest ensembles. Few celebrities have dared to underdress, which is why Lady Gaga took everyone by surprise. Especially because she had initially said she wasn’t able to attend. By the end of her moving performance, the audience was left speechless by her natural beauty and she received a standing ovation.
