Keanu Reeves Sacrificed Career to Care for Sick Sister — He Cleaned Her Home & Aided in Her Treatment for 10 Years

Keanu Reeves is a well-known actor who has appeared in numerous films and television shows throughout his career. While best known for his acting work, Reeves has also made headlines for his loving nature. And how he doted on his sister, Kim Reeves, who was diagnosed with leukemia in the 1990s. He loved his sister enough to sacrifice his career to help her with her illness.

Keanu Reeves has a big heart

Keanu Reeves and his sister, Kim, were raised by their mother, Patricia Taylor. His father was imprisoned when Reeves was just three years old. The original sentence was for ten years, but he only served two. He later left his family.

Patricia Taylor was a costume designer. Keanu and Kim often accompanied her on film sets, where they were exposed to the entertainment industry at a young age. The late 1980s and early 1990s were Keanu’s time to shine. He starred in “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “Point Break,” and “Speed,” which put him on the map in terms of Hollywood’s illustrious stars.

He cared for his sister

In the 1990s, Kim was diagnosed with leukemia, and Keanu immediately stepped up to help care for her. But, tragedy struck the Reeves family when his sister was diagnosed with leukemia. “My brother is my prince. He listens to every word, to every comma after every word that you are saying,” said Kim.

Reeves took time off from acting to be with his sister and provide her with the support and care she needed during her treatment. Some might say it was because he and his siblings grew up without a father figure. Their biological dad walked out on them when Keanu was 13 years old.

Despite the challenges that came with his sister’s illness, Keanu Reeves remained dedicated to her care. He was in the middle of filming The Matrix series in 2002, but he put that all on hold for his younger sibling. He did everything he could to support her. Including accompanying her to chemotherapy treatments, ensuring she took the correct medicine, cleaning her house, and feeding her. He even sold his house and moved closer to her to make this all possible. Her battle with leukemia lasted ten years. Throughout this, Keanu never left her side.

Keanu Reeves raising awareness

Reeves has been dedicated to cancer research since the ’90s, ever since his younger sister Kim battled leukemia around the same time as his first film.

The actor also set up his own non-profit organization to raise money for cancer research.

“I have a private foundation that’s been running for five or six years, and it helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research,” Reeves told the Ladies Home Journal in 2009. “I don’t like to attach my name to it, I just let the foundation do what it does.”
