Jim Carrey has been banned from Russia

Russia has released a statement that announced that various Canadian people have been banned from entering their country. Of course, this list existed already, but another 100 names were added, Jim Carrey included.

Jim Carrey banned from Russia

In the statement released by the Russian Foreign Minister, Russia has decided the ban 100 people from entering their country. This list includes government officials, parliamentarians, those who work in the media, and business representatives. Actors like Jim Carrey and Margaret Atwood are also included in the list. They have joined a list of 1000 Canadians who are no longer permitted into Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry statement reads, as per a google translation: “In response to the ongoing practice of imposing sanctions by the regime of Prime Minister J. Trudeau against the Russian leadership. Politicians and parliamentarians, representatives of the business community, experts and journalists, cultural figures, as well as anyone whom the Canadian Russophobic authorities consider objectionable, entry is closed on the basis of reciprocity for 100 Canadian citizens.”

They went on to explain it is because of the sanctions placed on Russia.

Tweets from Jim Carrey and Margret

On 15th November, Margret Atwood tweeted a joke about a trip to Russia she was going to do with Jim. “Dang! @JimCarrey and I had planned a little naughty weekend getaway in Moscow,” she joked. “Guess it will have to be Kyiv instead.” To which Jim Carrey replied: “Yes @MargaretAtwood, I’m afraid the worst has happened. We’re banned from Russia… But, the problems of 100 Canadians don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world! But, we’ll always have Paris. Here’s looking at you kid.”

Jim Carrey has been showing support for the people of Ukraine for some time. In 2014, he tweeted in response to a Ukrainian woman who was expressing the problems she and her people face daily. He wrote: ”My heart is with you, Maryna! I wish you and everyone in the Ukraine so much love, real freedom and peace”.

Then, two days after Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, Jim made another tweet empathizing with the Ukrainian innocents suffering because of Putin’s greed. “It breaks my heart to see innocent people (especially children) put in harms way by yet another of history’s grandiose political jerks,”he wrote. “Beware the unloved.”

Other celebrities addressing Putin

Jim Carrey is not the only public figure who has openly spoken against the war in Russia. Roger Waters, the former bassist for Pink Floyd wrote a letter addressing Putin directly. “Would you like to see an end to this war? If you were to reply and say, ‘Yes please.’ That would immediately make things a lot easier,” said Waters. “If you were to come out and say, ‘Also the Russian Federation has no further territorial interest beyond the security of the Russian speaking populations of The Crimea, Donetsk and Lubansk [sic].’ That would help too.”

He went on to talk about Putin’s desire to takeover the whole of Europe. He mentions the dangerous game of nuclear warfare that this could result in. “We might as well all stop playing the desperately dangerous game of nuclear chicken that the hawks on both sides of the Atlantic seem so comfortable with, and have at it. Yup, just blow each other and the world to smithereens.”
