Daughter designs amazing elderly-friendly tiny home for mom who wants to keep her independence

As we grow older, no matter how much our minds want to be independent, our bodies start needing the help and care of others. During the last years of our lives, there are very few of us who would not like to spend them in the company of our closest people. This was Merle’s intention when she returned to Victoria in Australia as an elderly person.

Merle wanted to live close to her family but alone. Now, a house is not generally very elderly-friendly, with its stairs and corridors. Fortunately, Ferne, her daughter, had expertise in the matter. She is a small house designer and jumped at the chance to give something wonderful to her mother. Thus, she began the process of making her most special home – the one where her mother would live.

Ferne’s mother was not too elderly, but the signs of age were apparent. With time, both of them knew that it would only get worse. Thus, Ferne designed the house while keeping all the emergency medical machinery that Merle may require in the future, in mind.

A House For The Elderly

The final house span 23.5 ft by 8 ft. The entrances were wide and equipped with ramps. As such, it is one of the most mobility-friendly and accessible houses in the world. The height of the countertops in the kitchen was specially built to fit Merle’s reach.

Furthermore, all the walls in the house have handrails, so that Merle can always catch something to steady herself. The house’s beautiful patio is completely disassembled and reassembled in case Merle decides to move again. There is also a beautiful farm view that provides enough motivation to anyone to be unable to even imagine going somewhere else.

Additionally, the walls and roofs have extra good quality insulation so that Merle will not be feeling too cold in the winter. Pre-installed screens keep insects out. It might sound like an unnecessary feature, but in Australia, it is extremely important. The primary screen attached to the ramp at the entrance is completely motorized. One single button is all one needs to operate it.

Merle selected the interior designs and colors because, after all, it was her home. The house also has underfloor heating, as well as a non-slip and flat floor to let Merle walk without any worries.

Merle Has No Complaints

The coolest part is probably the bed. During the day, Merle can press a button and motors will lift the bed to the ceiling. Cabinets are located inside the wall. Drawers are kept in easily accessible and practical spaces to make it as easy as possible for Merle to reach them.

Theoretically, it has everything that an elderly person can need. But, how does Merle feel about it? Merle says that it is her daughter’s best present to her to date. Now that says a lot! There are reasons for it, of course. She explains how the bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom are all quite close together. Moreover, the corridors are so wide that a walker is hardly a problem.

Both Ferme, and we, believe that this is her best house so far. The exterior looks amazing as well. It has a practical shape but it is sure to make you turn your head to take a second look. Not even Merle can pick out which part is her favorite!
