Chris Rock Has a Message About Playing The ‘Victim’ After Will Smith’s Apology Video

By now almost everyone in the world who is connected to the internet knows about the infamous Will Smith slap. The night at the Oscars turned sour when he walked up on stage and Slapped Chris Rock for making jokes about his wife. After facing some serious repercussions for his behavior, Smith released a video on his YouTube channel as his way of apologizing. Chris Rock did not respond with open arms. But he has shared how he is not ready to talk with Will, and spoke about “playing the victim”.

Will Smith and Chris Rock

Here is a little background information on the incident. Will Smith was in the audience during the last Oscars night. He was with his wife, Jada, laughing away at the jokes being said by comedian Chris Rock. At one point, the jokes turned to Jada Pinkett and her shaved head. Will Smith could not handle the audacity of Rock’s joke. He got up on stage and Slapped Chris across the face – in front of everyone.

Since that night, Will Smith has been banned from the academy for 10 years. Outside of his apology on social media, Will Smith hasn’t really commented about the incident at the Oscars. But, he allegedly reached out to Chris Rock and asked if they could meet up to talk out their differences. According to a recent video, Will Smith mentioned that Chris Rock responded that he was not ready to talk yet.

A few days after the slap incident, will Smith also took to Instagram to make an apology for all to see. “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris,” the Instagram post read. “I was out of line and I was wrong”. He then added: “I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Smith’s apology

Will Smith wants nothing more than for Chris Rock to accept his apology. It seems he wants the acceptance to be noted publicly, but Chris is not interested. At least not for now. Smith had apologized in various ways, but he recently added a video to his YouTube channel. In this clip, he addressed the camera and explained to his audience how he has tried to reach out to Chris to apologize personally.

In the video, Will Smith said: “I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk. And when he is, he will reach out. So, I will say to you Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Smith went on to explain his actions. Additionally, he ensured the public know that Jada had no influence over his behavior with Chris Rock. He spoke about his history with the comedian, and how that was the basis of his reaction.

Furthermore, he added that he hates disappointing people. “I made a choice on my own, from my own experiences, from my history with Chris,” he said. “Jada had nothing to do with it. I’m sorry, babe. Disappointing people is my central trauma. I hate when I let people down,” he said. “It hurts me psychologically and emotionally to know I didn’t live up to people’s image and impression of me.”

Chris Rock’s response

Chris rock has not been very forthcoming with comments about the slap he received from Smith. However, he has made a few jokes on stage. One of the things he mentioned was how playing the victim steals the spotlight from true victims who need help. “If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims. Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith, I went to work the next day, I got kids.”

According to the Desert Sun newspaper, he told the reporter that he was fine, and his loss of hearing following the slap was getting better. He mentioned that he was waiting to get paid before he said anything further. “I’m OK, I have a whole show and I’m not talking about that until I get paid,” said Chris. “Life is good. I got my hearing back,” he added.
