Pets are like family to most people. People love and spoil their pets like they do their own children. However, sometimes people fall on hard times and are unable to continue caring for their pets. When this happens they often end up at an animal shelter.
Sweet Girl Surrendered
One animal shelter in Chattanooga, Tennesse, known as McKamey Animal Center, issued a response on Facebook after Lilo came to them with a note from her mom. The sweet pup was surrendered to the shelter because her mom could no longer care for her. The letter received by the animal shelter said, “Please keep my name. My name is Lilo. Please love me. My mom can’t keep me and is homeless with 2 kids. She tried her best but can’t get help. I cost too much for her. She really loves me, and I’m a great dog and love to be loved on. Please don’t abuse me,” After finding the note, the animal shelter had a shocking and heartwarming response.
Animal Shelter Provides Assurance
It turns out that Lilo was found, still with her leash on, by a kind stranger and taken to the animal shelter. When the animal shelter found the note, they issued a heartwarming response. They opened their statement by letting Lilo’s mom know that she is safe. “If you are reading this, we hope you will come forward to reclaim her,” the post said. “We will help you with whatever you need to care for her, to the best of our ability. Lilo definitely misses you, and we would like nothing more than to see her go back to the family she loves.” The animal shelter also explained that they would keep Lilo’s name.
Rising costs of living and unforeseen expenses like medical coverage, car repairs, and even unexpected death, often derail the plans we had. This means that sometimes, although it’s not desirable, our only option is to surrender our pets. We just have to hope someone comes along to love them and give them the life we think they deserve. This means that Lilo isn’t the only pet to be in this position. Fortunately, there are some resources and recommendations for dealing with this kind of hardship.

Animal Shelters Have Resources
The Humane Society is a nationwide organization whose purpose is to love pets. We always hope to keep our pets with us, therefore, many of the resources provided by the HS offer assistance with food and other necessities. They also work with local vets to cut the cost of medications or surgeries so families can prolong their time with their beloved pets. An animal shelter may be able to help parents find the solutions that best fit their family’s needs.
According to Forbes, there are several legal ways to ensure your pets get the care they need, even if you can’t provide it yourself. For example, they suggest putting someone in place to take over guardianship should anything happen to you. This is an affirming way to put your worries to rest because, let’s face it, death can be unpredictable, and our pets should have a safety net too!
As a last resort, sometimes we need extra help to care for our pets or find a new home for them. In this case, there are simple things you can do, like hire a pet sitter or ask a friend/family member for help, or to take your pet into their homes. Adoption is always a last resort but, unfortunately, is at times unavoidable. Know that there are compassionate individuals out there who strive to care for and help others as much as possible. Animal shelters and other resources have been implemented to ensure pets get the love and care they need. Meanwhile, owners get the peace of mind they need.
The animal shelter said that if Lilo’s mom didn’t come forward, they would continue to care for her as they tried to find her a forever home. However, some exciting news has come to light! A new update posted by the animal shelter explains that Lilo has been reunited with her mom and family. Happy endings do exist in life, and the love and compassion shown by the staff at the animal shelter was truly breathtaking and inspirational.
