One of the most heartwarming and absolutely unique stories from this time of year happened a few years ago. An unlikely duo became best friends when a neighbor and a stranger showed the world the size of their hearts.

Chris Salvatore was 31 when he moved to a city where he didn’t know anyone else. Being the friendly neighbor that he was, he introduced himself to the elderly woman who lived next door. Norma Cook was 89-years-old at the time and lived alone with her cat, Hermes. Eventually, Chris invited Norma to move in with him, as she needed constant care.

“She couldn’t be happier that I asked. I was over there visiting most days anyway. The only other option was for her to go into a facility. I just couldn’t do that to someone who is like my own grandmother.”

Today

A few years later, when Norma was 89, her health took a turn for the worse and Chris stepped in to offer his assistance and care. Suffering from multiple health complications, as well as leukemia meant her medical expenses were starting to pile up as well. So, Christ set up a GoFundMe for Norma and the donations started pouring in.

It’s What a Good Neighbor Would Do

Norma and Chris would spend most days together, enjoying each other’s company. Whether it was to share a pizza, or a glass of champagne, they quickly became best friends and family.

Sadly, Norma passed away approximately four years after meeting Chris. However, it was his love and kindness that gave her a peaceful farewell.

“She taught me to love so much deeper than I ever could imagine possible. Norma opened the hearts of so many people during a time when it was desperately needed. She was a truly powerful woman who had the ability to bring people together who may not have crossed paths otherwise.”

Chris shared the news with the world when Norma passed away. All that she wanted was to be able to leave this world with her dignity intact, and he provided that kindness for her. Surely, Norma and Chris are perfect examples of how we should treat one another, whether we’re a neighbor or family members, or a stranger.

It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news that earlier this morning the world lost a truly inspiring, beautiful woman. Norma is now resting peacefully in the eternal and while she may no longer physically be with us, her spirit will continue to fill the hearts of so many people. Perhaps Norma’s lasting legacy is that her story helped the world to see the true meaning of love. Norma reminded me that we all are created to love and all desire to be loved.”

Chris told TODAY that Norma considered him to be the grandson she never had, and he saw her as the most loving grandmother. This holiday season, remember that kindness and care for each other can change someone’s life. Even if they are simply a neighbor.
