Tom Selleck was once accused of stealing – this is how he settled the dispute

Most people remember the actor Tom Selleck with his charismatic smile and Hawaiian button-down shirt. His many roles in TV shows have allowed him to become a household name of sorts. In his later years, he started farming, or at least he owned a farm that grew avocados. It has become known that an agency in California suspected him of stealing water to feed his plants during a harrowing draught.

From TV to Agriculture

Tom Selleck’s bought an expansive 60-acre ranch in Ventura County, California, in 1988. This was an unexpected turn of events for his fans, who had only known him as an actor. Tom Selleck decided to farm avocados, a choice thought even stranger since he had been candid about his distaste for the fruit. He even went as far as to say avocados make him gag. “I don’t eat ’em…Honestly, they make me gag. But it’s just as well. I’ll sell my portion,” he said.

But, in 2015, he was accused of stealing water to water his avocado trees. This occurred during an intense draught season, one of California’s worst. The State hired an expensive private investigator to keep an eye on Tom Selleck. This was how they found the water had been taken and was reportedly being used on his farm.

Tom Selleck’s attorney, Marty Singer said that Tom had paid for the water. “Mr. Selleck previously paid for all the water that he utilized, which the Calleguas Municipal Water District acknowledged had not been stolen.” Even though this statement was released to the Los Angeles Times, it is still unproven whether Tom paid for or stole the water. In a private settlement, which both lawyers agreed on, Tom was to pay the $22,000 that the Californian agency had paid for the private investigator.

Tom Finds Farming Peaceful

Tom Selleck loves to keep his life on private terms, as opposed to allowing the media to portray him in their own light. “I’m a fairly private person,” he said. “My relationships and my ranch keep me sane.” Tom finds solace in his farm life. He is active in his role as a farmer. “I do grunt work and I make the rounds,” he told the magazine. “I like watching things grow. It’s a retreat.”

He finds the farm life more real than his acting career. “great counterpoint to the acting business, which is an abstraction—you do something, it’s up on a piece of film, and everybody argues whether it’s good or bad. [On the ranch], you dig a hole and plant an oak tree—and I’ve probably planted a thousand of them—it’s real. It’s there, and you can watch it grow.”
