Some films leave an immediate impact, becoming cultural touchstones, while others quietly build their legacy over time. Even with strong performances, critical acclaim, and an impressive cast, certain movies seem to fade from mainstream discussion. This is especially true in the career of an actor as prolific as Tom Hanks, whose filmography spans decades and includes some of the most recognizable movies in Hollywood history. Yet, among his many roles, there is one that he feels has not received the recognition it deserves. Despite its gripping story, award-winning cinematography, and a cast featuring future A-list stars, Road to Perdition (2002) remains an overlooked entry in his body of work. Hanks has recently spoken about his surprise that the film is rarely mentioned and why he hopes it will be rediscovered in the future.
Reflecting on the Film

Speaking on the ReelBlend podcast (via The Independent), Hanks reflected on the film’s reception. “For some reason, Road to Perdition rarely comes up, even though it was an incredibly important movie for me,” he said. He highlighted cinematographer Conrad Hall’s work and noted the presence of Law and Craig, both of whom later became major Hollywood figures. “I killed both of them in that movie,” he added with a touch of humor.
Finding A New Audience

While he does not fully understand why the film is not discussed more often, Hanks believes it could find a new audience over time. He drew a comparison to classic films that gain recognition long after their release. “People always ask which movies will be remembered years from now,” he said. “As someone who watches Turner Classic Movies often, I find that the most obscure films from the 1940s and 1950s are the most interesting. Without any preconceived notions, I can experience them fresh. When a movie still holds up and moves you, it’s incredible. I hope Road to Perdition gets that kind of rediscovery.”
Though it may not be among his most frequently discussed roles, Hanks clearly holds Road to Perdition in high regard. With its striking cinematography, strong performances, and enduring themes, the film may yet earn greater appreciation in the years ahead.
