When you think of a geologist, what do you usually think of? I don’t know about you, but I think of a lot of boring rocks. But something found recently completely changed my mind about what geologists do. Actually, scrap that. This rare rock formation discovery actually blew my mind. Are you ready for it?

Yes! The Cookie Monster! That same loveable character from Sesame Street that completely devoted his existence to cookies, yeah him.

A Monsterously Rare Formation

It all happened when a Geologist in California received a rock that was sent to him from Brazil. Much to this Californian scientist’s surprise, this boring brown, egg-shaped rock actually was quite different on the inside. It was bright blue and creamy and was created in just the right way to resemble a friendly monster we all know [1].

The rock was found in the Rio Grande dol Sul region near Soledade in Brazil [2] and sent to Mike Bowers, a Californian scientist. I think it’s important for you to know that these types of rocks are actually what Bowers specializes in, unlike other geologists in the field. Because of this, Bowers was actually able to identify the worth of this exceptionally unique find.

Why should I care?

To someone who knows absolutely nothing about rocks, you might assume it’s pretty valuable. But, you might not realize it is estimated to be worth $10,000 [2]!

Now, you might be thinking, ‘who in their right mind would pay $10,000 for a small brown rock?’ but I mean – have you ever seen another rock resemble a Sesame Street character so well? I certainly haven’t.

I mean look at the similarity!

“I think this is probably the most perfect Cookie Monster out there. I have seen others but here you have it complete (both sides) Lucas Fassari is actually the one who found it,” Mike Bowers shared. ” This is very unusual! There are a few famous agates out there: the owl, the scared face… there are many approximate ones but rare to find clear well defined like that. Prices can be very high. I was proposed over $10,000 by 5 different buyers. Rare,” [2].

What’s cool about this type of rock is it’s not unique to Brazil. It’s found all around the world in areas where ancient lava has settled into a cavity.

You won’t find rare formations in your backyard, but who knows, maybe you’ll be the one to find Big Bird.
