This clever little penguin escapes the jaws of a hungry killer whale in this insane footage!
Killer whales, or Orcas, are a well-known whale species. It’s not hard to know you’re looking at one, thanks to their black and white distinctive patterning. They also like to feast on many different foods, and, in the Antarctic, their favorite snacks are penguins and seals.
Boat trip of a lifetime
Imagine you are on a boat in Antarctica, enjoying the breathtaking, icy views. Looking out towards the blue and white icebergs and crystal clear water. And then, suddenly, you see a pod of orcas chasing a little penguin through the water.
Matthew and Anna Karsten of Expert Vagabond were filming on their boat trip and saw exactly that. The most amazing part is what they managed to capture on film after the water chase.
Penguin escapes near death
While filming the rare event, the clever little penguin manages to leap up and onto the boat! The penguin escapes the killer whales who were in hot pursuit. The penguin was even helped into the boat by tourists.
Everyone on the boat seems rather calm, even though they now have a pod of orcas following them and the penguin.
“It was crazy to see in person. It was like watching a National Geographic episode on location. I imagine the penguin was very relieved to get away.”Matthew Karsten
As the footage comes to an end, the proud penguin can be seen triumphant. Seeing a penguin escape an almost sure death must have been incredible to witness!
“After cruising for a little bit, the penguin said goodbye to the boat and hopped back into the icy water.”Matthew Karsten
