Alright, so it’s really quite simple! First, you need to figure out what number each different kind of animal represents.

Remember, we said you need to first determain what each bird represents as a number:

Therefore:

If three racoons equal 21, divide 21 by 3 to find out what 1 racoon represents.

1 racoon = 7 because 7 x 3 = 21

So, if 1 racoon = 7, and 1 duck + 1 hippo + 1 hippo = 17 then each hippo must represent 5!

racoon (7) + hippo (5) + hippo (5) = 17

We now know that a hippo represents the number 5. So, in the third sum, the frog must represent the number 8!

frog (8) + hippo (5) + hippo (5) = 18
