Morgan Freeman is by far one of the most iconic actors known to Hollywood. His deep voice is recognizable over and above all the voices and is carried in the hearts and memories of all his fans. Recently, the world was informed of an invisible condition that he has been struggling with. It causes pain that paralyzes his mind and body. He has been suffering in silence until now.
Morgan Freeman was in a Car Crash
Morgan Freeman has starred in many high-end films like Shawshank Redemption, The Bucket List, and The Dark Knight Trilogy. He even played God in Evan Almighty. The beloved actor is now making his way through the headlines because of a condition he is struggling with, thanks to a car crash in 2008 that left him with irreversible damage.
He was driving around his neighborhood, near his Mississippi home when the crash occurred. He and his passenger were badly hurt and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital. Morgan remained conscious the entire time, communicating to his rescuers as they pried him from the wreckage. According to the editor of the Charleston Sun, the emergency response team had to use hydraulic cutters to get him out of his Nissan Maxima. In other words, the Jaws of Life.
The result of the crash left him with multiple broken bones. Including his arm and elbow. He also has serious shoulder damage. After the helicopter got him to the hospital, he was immediately placed in surgery to correct the nerve damage to his arm.
Irreversible Damage
Four years after his car crash, Morgan Freeman was interviewed with Esquire magazine. He opened up about the accident. Moreover, he told the interviewer, Tom Chiarella, how he was left with long-lasting pain from the damage to his body.
Tom Chiarella pointed out that he had “lost a little control of his own autonomy”. He said: “It hurts when he walks, when he sits still when he rises from his couch, and when he missteps in a damp meadow. More than hurts. It seems a kind of agony, though he never mentions it.” Tom added that Morgan Freeman prefers to act as if there is nothing wrong. But, sometimes the pain takes over. “He doesn’t like to show it, but there are times when he cannot help but lose himself to a world-ending grimace,” he said.
Morgan Freeman Now has Fibromyalgia
In 2010, he was interviewed with PEOPLE magazine, and he said: “I suffered nerve damage and it hasn’t gotten better. I can’t move it. If you don’t move your hand, it will swell up. Do you know you move your hand about a million times a day?”
If the car crash wasn’t enough, Morgan Freeman has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. According to Mayo Clinic, fibromyalgia is a condition that could be triggered by an accident. So the car crash did not leave Morgan with only long-lasting nerve damage. But, also a condition that sends widespread pain throughout his body. “Symptoms often begin after an event, such as physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress,” reads the Mayo Clinic website.
In addition to crippling pain throughout his body, fibromyalgia causes chronic fatigue and “cognitive difficulties”. The latter is often referred to as “fibro fog.”
Morgan has since become a spokesperson for those struggling with fibromyalgia. He wants people to know that life goes on, even in the face of unimaginable pain. “There is a point to changes like these. I have to move on to other things, to other conceptions of myself, I play golf, and I still work. I can be pretty happy just walking the land.”
