‘Missing’ Drunk Man Spent Hours Helping a Search Party Look for Himself

Most of us all had that one friend in university who, when we would go out for the night, would wander off and no one knew where they went. If you didn’t have a friend like that, it is most likely because you were that friend. Well, this man takes the “drunk wanderer” to a whole other level. A man in Turkey had a bit too much to drink with his friends one night and wandered off into the forest. Hours later, they found him – participating in the very search party that was looking for him. Missing Drunk Man Spends Hours Searching For Himself

Near the end of September, Beyhan Mutlu went out drinking with his friends in his rural town in Turkey. In his inebriated state, he at one point during the night inevitably decided that a walk in the woods would do him some good. Unannounced to his friends, he left and wandered off into the woods alone.

When he didn’t return, his group of friends began to get worried. Was he lost? Was he hurt? Did he need help? They weren’t sure. The pals alerted the authorities, who immediately set up a search party to find their wandering, drunken friend.

A Massive Effort

When news of missing Mutlu got out, the rest of the townspeople were concerned as well. Neighbors and other friends joined in the search party, searching through the woods and calling out Mutlu’s name over and over. The search part grew so large, that many people didn’t actually know Mutlu or what he looked like. They simply wanted to help the effort.

After hours and hours of searching, they still hadn’t found the man. Where could he possibly be? Still, they didn’t give up and kept on calling out his name as they searched through the forest. Finally, however, one of the members of the search party spoke up with some vital information:

“Who are we looking for? I am here.” said the man.

The man was none other than Mutlu himself. He had evidently been so drunk that when he first encountered the search parties, he didn’t realize that they were calling out his name or that they were searching for him at all. Though shocked and I’m sure a little annoyed, the authorities made sure the man was alright and escorted him home where we are sure he went straight away to sleep off what will likely be a pretty rough hangover.

Not the First Time

Mutlu isn’t the first time someone has taken part in their own search party. Back in 2012, a woman was visiting Iceland alone. She first went missing in Iceland’s southern volcanic region near the island’s Eidgja canyon. This area is reasonably remote but is a popular walking area for tourists. (2)

The woman was supposed to return to her tour bus along with the other passengers, but she didn’t. The driver waited for nearly an hour for her, and she still didn’t return. Quickly, the driver alerted the police, who shortly after began a search party for the missing woman. They were searching the hillsides with the help of other people who also joined in. They described the missing woman as a five-foot-two Asian woman wearing all black clothing.

There The Whole Time

Finally, after hours of looking, the authorities called off the search party at three in the morning. You could say it was a successful one, as, technically, the woman did turn up. The only difference? They didn’t find her, she more or less found herself.

As it turns out, she had been sitting on the bus the entire time. Before getting back on the bus, she had allegedly decided to freshen up a bit which evidently involved changing her clothes. For one reason or another, she didn’t recognize the description of herself, so had no idea the driver had reported her missing or that it was her who they were looking for. In the future, the driver said that he would likely be more vigilant when doing the final count of the number of people on the bus.
