Texas couple turns grain silos into boutique tiny home

AirBnbs have become one of the most popular ways to travel. It has opened up the possibility of family holidays or romantic getaways for many people of varying financial situations. There are so many unique locations out there the sky is now the limit for holiday accommodation. One couple has converted six old grain silos into self-catering accommodations in the form of tiny houses.

Grain Silo? Or, ultimate AirBnB?

AirBnBs come in all shapes and sizes. From large ocean-side mansions to glamorous tented desert dwellings. One couple from Texas, Lubbock, is bringing something a little different to the world of AirBnB. Rick and Carol Pevey have converted some of the grain silos on their property into self-catering Airbnb tiny houses. Carol Pevey was the one who thought up this idea, and she had some serious convincing to do when it came to pitching the concept to her husband, Rick. In an interview with KCBD, Carol said: “I just have always kind of loved grain silos. I’m quirky like that a little bit. So, I kind of like the not-so-ordinary things.”

Rick was unsure about Carol’s plan when she first asked him if he wanted to do it. Carol knew her idea was not exactly one you hear of every day, and some convincing would be needed to get Rick on her side. “She asked me, ‘do you wanna do this?'” said Rick. “And I was like, “no I don’t wanna do this.'”

The whole process took them about a year to get the silos converted into presentable tiny houses ready to be rented. The tiny house grain silos have never been built in the county of Lubbock, making them a unique addition to the area. “We’re just super excited. It’s unique to Lubbock. We just really want a family-friendly place where people can come out and just kind of unwind, get away from the crazy world,” Carol said.

Finding the silos

The silos were not originally from their farm in Lubbock. In fact, Carol and Rick had to go on a hunt to find grain silos that were for sale. Next, they would have to work out the building plans. The first and largest silo they found came from Rick’s hometown, Ralls. They named this one The Watson.

It no longer functions as a grain silo, but rather as a tiny house equipped with a dining room, living room, large bathroom, and a fully-kitted kitchen. Additionally, the bedroom sits in a loft on the second floor which boasts a king-sized bed. Lastly, there is a covered patio out front where one can sit and watch the sun go down. “The sunsets out here are gorgeous … you just can’t beat them,” said Rick.

Next, they found some smaller silos, which they named after their grandchildren, who are very excited to visit their grandparents to see the tiny house grain silos named after them. “They all know which one is their silo, and they want to know when they can come stay in them, so they’re very excited,” said Carol.

The grain silo tiny houses are perfect for any kind of occasion whether you are just looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life or a destination wedding of unique standards. “Think kind of like a campground. When you go camping, you kind of get to know the people you’re around. And that’s kind of what we want to have going on out here.” said Rick.

Other silo tiny houses in America

These grain silo tiny houses might be new to Lubbock, Texas, but there are numerous in and around America. Montanna is home to one, and it was built on five acres of land on Clark Farm; these silos add a modern twist to an old-school design. These silos differ from Rick and Carol’s idea because they stick to the cylindrical shape of the silo. They haven’t added a porch onto them. But, they did add a big window for those relaxing in bed can enjoy the view.

Then, we have modern beauty, designed by Christoph Kaiser. He bought a 1950s grain silo off Craigslist and built the dream tiny home from it. This one is immaculately designed. and every last detail was well thought out. This one boasts a beautiful sliding door that moves with the curve of the silo walls.

It is a two-story home, with a bedroom on the second floor. “When it came to the interior, I wanted it to feel warm and welcoming, but it also had to be very simple. The rich grain and colour of the walnut cabinetry provides warmth and texture, but overall, the décor’s fairly stripped-back. There’s a lovely sense of calm, even though it’s in the heart of the city,” explains Christoph.
