If you’ve seen Gerard Butler’s movies, then you probably already know just how good of an actor he is. Most celebrities celebrate their birthdays with lavish events and parties. However, Butler decided to celebrate his in a way that would be beneficial to the environment. While he’s typically not one to make a big deal on his birthdays, he thought his 50th could be an exception. Though, to him, it was more of a spiritual get-together than anything.

Gerard Butler’s 50th Birthday

Gerard Butler has also stated that there’s really nothing in particular about his birthday that he deems celebration-worthy. “I’m not a birthday party guy. I’ve often, on my birthday, at 7 pm, said ‘okay, let’s have dinner.’ And everybody is told with 15 minutes to spare,” Butler said. “But this time, I actually did a big event in Costa Rica and brought loads of friends down.” (1)

Some people don’t like drawing attention to themselves on this day, which to many, just means you’re one year older. It can be hard to accept the truth that you’re aging, and putting yourself in that spotlight can make you feel a little strange. However, Gerard Butler’s 50th birthday was actually an achievement, and he wanted to celebrate in the best way possible. Now that he is 51, Butler explains that he fondly remembers his 50th as it was a very powerful moment in his life.

In November 2019, Gerard Butler gathered a large group of his spiritual friends down in Costa Rica. “And it was very, very powerful. We brought down a lot of spiritual people, a lot of performers. We did a lot of environmental stuff, like releasing sea turtles out into the ocean. It was such a mix of so many things; I’m so glad I did it.’” (1)

The Importance Of Releasing Sea Turtles

Sea turtle conservation is vital to the well being of the environment. Especially in Costa Rica, where the three main turtle species that visit to lay their eggs are endangered. Between the olive ridley sea turtle, green sea turtle, leatherback sea turtle, and hawksbill sea turtle. The hawksbill turtle is actually one of the rarest species you could find in Costa Rica, as their numbers are practically zero at this point. This is due to their solitary nesting habits and lack of desire to find a mate. It’s considered lucky if you can encounter even one hawksbill during this time. You can find the ridley sea turtle all over the shore during nesting season as they do mass migrations known as arribadas.

One of the most popular places in Costa Rica for sea turtles is located at Tortuguero, translated to ‘Region of Turtles’. This is where all species mentioned above come to nest and find mates. It’s supposed to be a paradise for turtles to swim to during this time of year and is considered to be one of the largest nesting sites for the green sea turtle in the entire western hemisphere. What’s even more interesting is that sea turtles hatch a week before the new moon in the dead of night. One of the only ways you can witness sea turtles hatching from the sand and crawling toward the sea. Avoiding predators such as vultures and sometimes dogs.
