These Coffin Office Chairs Are Perfect For Dead-End Jobs

Just a week ago, there was a tweet about coffin office chairs that went viral. It definitely sparked the imaginations of those who remain online. The chair attracted the attention of those who would need to be online all the time. And what could be better for one’s spine than the perfectly angular shapes, the undead vibes, and the wood-crafted exteriors of this chair? In fact, the appeal of such a chair goes way beyond just the aesthetics. The chair also depicts a mood that goes perfectly well with an office setting. As one can already guess, nothing screams being trapped in a cubicle more than such a uniquely designed chair. One could also use it as a perfect place to showcase their Zoom calls- just for everyone to realize how tiresome a Monday can be.

The coffin office chair is the brainchild of Chairbox– a designer based in the UK. The original name of the design, quite aptly, is “The Last Shift Office Chair.” The unique design came to the designer when he was simply languishing in his friend’s living room. “I thought that if I die in this pose, they might have to bury me like that. It would be so inconvenient to put me in a coffin. They probably would need a special coffin in this case. I told my friend about it, and we laughed. But after a couple of weeks, I returned to that idea and explored it a bit more. Later, I made a 3D model in CAD software, rendered it, and posted it online.” Some users on Reddit are of the opinion that the chair looks straight out of Rene Magritte’s painting, “The Balcony.”[1]

The Coffin Office Chair Offers A Lasting Rest

The creator of the coffin office chair has denied this speculation, claiming that he had never seen this painting. Rather, this “was just a pure reflection of my taste.” Interestingly, his design was also governed by a study that claimed that sitting for six to eight hours straight could cause mortality. He shared, “By design, humans were not created to sit on chairs for eight hours a day.” [2]

Since the creator had been pretty anonymous after his design went viral, several users started quoting different people and news agencies. They believed that they could end up finding this person. Soon, the artist himself reached out to Designboom where he claimed that he had posted the first picture on the 25th of October, 2021. To this, one user wrote, “Finally! An office chair that reflects what it actually feels like to sit in on yet another pointless two-hour meeting that could have been a simple email!”

For some, the internet fame of the coffin office chair is enough to convince them of its use. And to be honest, it does look quite good conceptually. Therefore, it is quite mindboggling that gaming companies have been spending their resources on race car chairs when they could have simply built something similar. For Hope Carrigan from Pcgamer, there are a couple of variations that she would prefer on her gaming chair. “Let’s get that plush high-end vampire inlay with lumbar support and a head pillow. Bring it inline with something like Razer’s Iskur. After all, we’re still the living dead, for now.”[3]

The tech writer also wants the coffin office chair to move. “The boxed design makes for a completely enclosed chair, which is just begging to recline. A coffin-shaped chair that reclines for full desk zombie mode is a dream chair almost worth dying for. Many gaming chairs can already go full horizontal mode so it doesn’t seem too much to ask, especially when it just makes so much sense. So please, gaming chair companies, stop trying to put me in the hot seat when what I really want is the long dead cold one. Ditch all that racing flair and stripes, and give us a chair full of plush entropy. It’s what the people want.

And just this once, maybe people do want the coffin office chair!
