People swear by Craigslist, but sometimes you never know what you’re going to get. As it turns out, a woman from Colton, California found $36,000 in cash in a couch that she had purchased through this site. Fortunately, the woman- Vicky Umodu- was honest enough to not keep the cash for herself. She immediately gave it back to the family she bought the couch from. In fact, Umodu stated that she had no reason to keep the money.
“God has been kind to me and my children, they’re alive and well, I have three beautiful grandchildren, so what can I ever ask from God?” Umodu said.
This entire event took place when the woman decided to go on the internet to purchase furniture.
And as luck would have it, she found what she needed on Craigslist. “I scrolled down and saw free items. So, I clicked on it, and the first thing I came up with was this family that wanted to give a sofa, and everything in the bedroom set… I said maybe it’s a gimmick, so I called them.”
Incidentally, this was anything but a gimmick. The family giving away the furniture stated that they were grieving the loss of a loved one. And this was why they were liquidating everything they had on the property. Umodu mentioned that the sofas and chairs that they were selling were perfect for her house.

“I just moved it, and I don’t have anything in my house. I was so excited, so we picked it up and brought it in.” When she settled them in her house and started examining them, she found something interesting. Apparently, Craigslist had also turned into her own personal pot of Gold. “I thought it was a heat pad.” But after she unzipped the cushion, she chanced upon envelopes filled with cash. “I was just telling my son, come, come, come! I was screaming, this is money! I need to call the guy.”
When Umodu went to return the money, she heard quite an interesting story. Apparently, the man who had passed away had hidden cash throughout the house. Although the rest of the family had simply found a few hundreds of dollars. But the amount that Vicky found was definitely quite substantial. It made them think as to why the man had hidden so much cash.
Nevertheless, they wanted to thank their customer from Craigslist- and decided to pay for a new refrigerator. Interestingly, they also gave Vicky a sum of $2,200. “I was not expecting a dime from him, I was not.”
