It doesn’t take much to be a human. In an age where people live on minimum wage, every penny counts. So, when you visit a restaurant, you should realize that the staff sometimes bends over backward to accommodate a customer. Therefore, it wouldn’t go amiss to repay the favor. In one such restaurant, you have Kasey Simmons- who absolutely loves to make people happy. But on one fateful Tuesday in 2016, it was she who was smiling ear to ear. Simmons had been working at an Applebee’s restaurant where he was waiting on a customer. The customer had ordered “the cheapest thing on the menu, which was flavored water.” While the bill came to $0.37, the customer left a tip of $500. Needless to say, this did spread like wildfire, along with a note that was written on a napkin.[1]
Just a day before this fateful event took place, Kasey had been shopping at a grocery store. Here, he came across an old lady who was looking for help- with no one bothering to stop. The woman looked pretty despondent, so Kasey went up to her and helped her out with her groceries. Speaking later, the waiter stated, “It was only $17, but it’s not about the money. It’s about showing someone you care.” The tip that changed Kasey’s life came from this woman’s daughter. She explained that Kasey had been humane enough to help her mother out on her husband’s third death anniversary.

Lady Leaves $500 As Tip For Restaurant Worker For Helping Her Mother
The note read, “On one of the most depressing days of the year… you made my mother’s day wonderful. You insisted on paying. Told her she is a very beautiful woman. I have not seen this woman smile this much since dad died. You are one of a kind. Have fun with this… you made her year.” Interestingly, one wouldn’t go wrong if they believed that Kasey appreciated the note more than the money. Speaking to WFAA after the incident, Kasey mentioned, “It’s selfish really. When people smile, I feel better. It lightens my world.”[2]
Talking about the incident that took place at the grocery store, Kasey said, “I noticed there was a lady standing in front of me. It looked like she had been crying because once in a while she’d glance over at me. I go up to her and say, ‘It’s not raining inside. There’s no reason to look so down. I’m sure you have a beautiful smile because you are a beautiful lady. It looked like she had a bad day. She kind of shut me down a little bit. I wanted to make her at least grin a little bit and it wasn’t happening.” After paying for the bill, he handed the woman his Applebee’s business card- through which her daughter tracked him down and presented a huge tip.

Kasey also added, “Every time I get to work, I say, ‘It’s a great day. I’m going to make some friends and make some money. This day happened to be the worst day of my Applebee career. I was having such a bad night that I was about to walk out of that place and this lady comes in and I said, “Hey, my name’s Kasey. I’m just letting you know that I am so far behind and I’m in the weeds right now.” After the family placed the order, Simmons came back with a $0.65 check, which they asked to split into two credit cards.
Kasey joked, “By this point, I said, ‘This lady’s crazy.’ I brought her the check and she asked me to split the 65 cents between two credit cards and I said, ‘Are you serious?’ I think she wanted to see if I was a real nice guy or a fake nice guy.” The real nice guy splits it and brings the lady her check. Simmons then divided the payment, and the lady left $500.37 on one of the receipts as a tip.
And one shouldn’t forget the note either!
