UPS Driver Sees Note Scribbled On Package, Helps Toddler And Mom Escape

A Tiffy Taffy Highlight Story: Sometimes there are stories that are just too unbelievable to keep locked away. That’s why we scour the archives and bring some of them back to enjoy again. They may make you smile or shed a tear, but they’re always meant to add a little positivity to your day. This story is from December 2016.

Good samaritans seem to be few and far between these days. In 2016 a UPS Driver found himself in the right place at the right time to help a woman and her child from her husband. The rescue by the delivery man is something you’d usually see in a movie. His observant eyes helped him notice the message that the abused woman had passed him through the package that he had picked up from her. The story that later came to the forefront was nothing short of harrowing.

The father and husband, James Jordan had been constantly abusing both his wife and his child. He had locked his 3-year-old son in a room and had left him there for 15 hours without any water or food.

UPS Driver Sees The Signs of Domestic Abuse And Calls 911

Imagine what the son must have gone through, hearing the noises of his mother being abused severely, both sexually and physically. So deranged was her husband that he had taken her phone so she wouldn’t be able to contact anyone and kept beating her mercilessly. Once, she had tried to escape, but her husband had caught her and dragged her inside by her hair. When all hope seemed to be lost, the dark clouds seemed to have a silver lining.

The abused wife decided to call for a UPS driver to pick up a package. And when she handed him the package with the husband standing behind her with a gun, she managed to scribble ‘Call 911’ onto the package. It was fate that the UPS driver in question was an observant individual.

As luck would have it, the driver did notice the message and realized that this was, in no shape or form, a joke. He called the cops, and a SWAT team broke into the house to take the husband into custody. Later, he was charged with sodomy, domestic assault, unlawful use of a weapon, felonious restraint, and endangering the welfare of a child. The deed of the UPS driver was not ignored, as the UPS officials sent a statement to The New York Post, where they mentioned, “We are grateful this UPS Driver with more than a decade of service followed protocol when he saw a customer in distress and contacted authorities after he saw her message to contact 9-1-1.”

FYI, Your Delivery Man Receives Special Training For Such Emergencies

For those wondering, courier service workers like UPS and FedEx employees are trained to respond to any distress shown by the customer- since they have to walk into homes to deliver and pick up parcels. Some of the companies also have set protocols in place, if there seems to be a suspicious build-up in packages- which could signify that the homeowner in question might be sick, unconscious, or even dead. But truth be told, the UPS driver was probably no stranger to seeing a victim of domestic abuse. It has been reported that around 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men usually experience physical violence of some form from their intimate partner. Also 1 in 10 women experience sexual abuse at the hands of their intimate partner.

Needless to say, abuse can not only be sexual and physical, but also mental, and it is natural that such a situation would only get worse if people start turning a blind eye to it. So it is expected that one would be vigilant towards their family, friends, and neighbors, and stop domestic violence at the first sign. If an unknown UPS driver could do it- so can we.
