A dress-tux combo for prom

Like most 16-year-olds, Korban Green was preparing to graduate from high school. This involved planning an elaborate prom night, with sequins and all! Korban did not much care to conform to the standard tuxedo that everyone expected. He told his parents that he wanted to attend his prom wearing a dress. This did not come as much of a surprise to Korban’s mother because her son had been fond of a dress since he was a young boy. She mentioned that her son has an on-stage character that he performs with often. This character is a “sassy” drag queen known as Miss Frou Frou.

Korban’s mother posted about his outfit choice on her Twitter account, and it has since gone viral! The world has lapped up his creativity of combining a tuxedo top with a ball gown skirt. He finished off the ensemble with a crown fit for royalty, and he was ready for prom.

Nina captioned her post with: “At age 12 my son announced he wanted to go to his school # prom in a gown. Four years later we made it happen. I’m so incredibly #proud of him for being true to himself & the reception he got from his whole school was incredible. What do you think?”

Her post received a fantastically positive response. There were many comments supporting her acceptance of her son’s decisions. One comment read: ‘Ohhhhhhhh yes! You are an amazing beautiful mom and your child is a STAR’.

His classmates an teachers applauded

It can be quite a nerve-wracking event to attend prom for some people. Many thoughts and insecurities tend to rush through our heads. Korban arrived at his ballgown, and he was met with what his mother described as an “incredible” response. As he walked it the dance hall huge applause erupted. He got the standing ovation he deserved from all of his classmates, including the teachers who attended.

Korban’s mother is very proud of her son. She feels strongly about spreading the concept of acceptance of your child, no matter what their sexual orientation or style preference may be. She said: ‘I think it’s so important to fly the flag, for people who don’t get the support he does’, She said.

Nina also said that the response they got was not at all what they expected. however, they are so grateful for the positive remarks. “I see it as more of a protest because of some of the reaction we’ve had,” She said. “There’s a big message to get out there and I would want other children to be just as accepted and supported as Korben.”

Korban’s confidence was widely appreciated

Since the post has gone viral, Korban has become an inspiration to many people with similar preferences. There were many comments from people who wished they had felt accepted enough to do the same. not only that, but Nina’s post has inspired other mothers on their quest to raise their children with acceptance. One mother wrote:

“Your son looks so happy being able to wear what he wants to wear. I hope he also feels confident enough to know that he doesn’t have to be a drag queen to do so, as that seems to be how he is describing himself at the moment. He can just be a man who wears amazing dresses.”

Michelle Savage, a Norwich pride trustee said: “Korben is a ray of sunshine and that sparkly dress is the sparkle he brings to the world.”

“It’s a whole package with Korben, his family are incredible too – all of them. They’re a role model of what you get if you have a really loving family who totally accept and adore their child and let them be the best they can be, and lead the best life they can have.”
