10 Secrets the Beauty Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know

Have you ever wondered how celebrities and superstars always look so good? What’s their secret? Well, it turns out there are some pretty amazing tips and tricks being used! The beauty industry hides these things from us, but we’re going to spill the beans. Get ready to look your best, with the secrets of the stars!

1. Don’t skip the sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 will help keep your skin healthy and reduce the signs of aging. One study found that people who use sunscreen every day had 24% less skin aging than those who use sunscreen only intermittently. “Skin surface patterns reflect the severity of the sun’s damage to the deeper skin, especially to the elastic fibers and collagen,” says Dr. Adele Green, the study’s lead author. Have fun in the sun, but stay protected.[1][2]

2. Sensitive skin means you need certain products

You might think one-size-fits-all when it comes to facial cleansers and creams, but that’s not the case. Every skin type is different, and as such, each one has specific needs. If you have sensitive skin, those cells can’t hold on to moisture as well as they should. You should avoid peroxide or alcohol-based products because they will remove moisture from your skin, leaving it inflamed and irritated. “When losing more moisture, skin can easily dry out and be more reactive to products,” says Lauren Fine, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology. [2]

3. The beauty industry ignores the neck, but you shouldn’t

We have face creams, hand creams, eye creams, dry skin creams- you name it! While we always see how many products the beauty industry throws at us for keeping our face looking flawless, how many do we see for our neck? Not many! If you want your skin to look amazing, don’t ignore your neck. Continue your facial skincare routine down to your neck for optimum results.

4. Avoid ‘complementary’ products

When you travel or go to a new hotel, you may want to rub those free lotions all over your body. Perhaps those tiny bottles of soap smell wonderful and you’re tempted to use them in the shower before bed. Don’t do it! Your skin will thank you if you avoid using them, especially if you have dry skin. “These products frequently contain fragrances and preservatives that may further compound the usual travel-related dry skin problems,” says Scott Flugman, MD, a dermatologist at Huntington Hospital in Huntington, New York.[3]

5. Drink lots of water!

The beauty industry won’t tell you this one secret because it’s the most affordable way to improve your skin’s health. Drink water! While it’s obviously important to take care of what you are putting on the outside of your body (your skin), it’s equally important to pay attention to what goes inside as well. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to improve the appearance of your skin, and your body will thank you.

6. Wash behind your ears. Seriously

You’ve heard it said to you a thousand times as a kid. Wash behind your ears. Seriously, you should!
“Since the back of your ear is somewhat hidden, it can collect bacteria, especially because the sebaceous glands back there secrete a sebum to keep your skin moist,” Kirschner explained on Mother Nature Network. Bacteria like that can move down to your neck, and across your face, causing all kinds of reactions and acne.[4]

7. Get a facial massage

Even if you do the massage yourself by gently stroking your face, you can increase lymph drainage and promote healthy skin. Facial massages consist of “waking up your face, draining tension and fluid from your face to slow down the aging process, and promoting healthier facial skin,” according to Sya Warfield, a veteran massage artist and founder of Urban Oasis Massage.

8. Cheaper might be better

The number one thing the beauty industry won’t mention to you is this: drugstore brands can be just as good, if not better, than expensive name brands. That’s right! If you ever watch some beauty bloggers talking about certain products, you’ll see they try them all – even the cheap ones. Surprisingly, a lot of the time the cheaper brands are made with higher-quality ingredients and last longer.

9. Wash your face

You should be using a gentle cleanser on your face every single day. If you are using make-up remover wipes, or face cleansing wipes as your main way of cleansing your skin- stop! You must use a gentle cleanser to remove the build-up of oils and dirt on your skin Wipes merely spread the dirt around and never fully cleanse your skin. This leads to acne scarring and skin issues.

10. Get plenty of rest

More than a cliche, getting plenty of rest is one of the best things you can do for your skin’s appearance. Eating well, drinking lots of water, and getting plenty of rest will improve your skin’s health more than any product ever could. But the beauty industry can’t profit off of that, can they? Do yourself a favor, and take care of your body in the best way possible.
