The holidays can be the source of all of our joy as well as all of our dread. For moms, they have the unfortunate reality of having both. Although it’s extremely rewarding to see your family light up on Christmas, sometimes mom’s feel like an afterthought. Even after preparing for a big holiday feast, endless gift shopping, then having to entertain friends and family. All of this stress can really wear a mom down. SNL’s most recent episode (see video below) about moms and Christmas morning really pinpoints the mood all mom’s share around this time.

Christmas Morning
Your mom puts a lot of effort into the holidays so that everybody can enjoy themselves. Even though they will ask you for nothing in return most of the time, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get them the best Christmas gift ever! However, in this episode of SNL for Kristen Wiig, this was not the case at all.
The skit shows Wiig and her family, played by Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, and Chloe Fineman. All of them wake up delighted with the typical Christmas morning feeling we all share. Excited, eager, and ready to open up some of the best presents of the year. The Christmas Tree is lined with a menagerie of presents addressed to everybody. The whole family begins to rap their Christmas joy as they unwrap their presents.
“Well, I got a nerf gun! I got a hat! I got an autographed baseball bat! I got a telescope, I got a globe, I got a watch…” The gifts becoming more elaborate as they sing on.
And I Got A Robe
However, when the mom (Wiig), opens her one gift it turns out to just be… a robe. Unfortunately, almost every single mom gets some kind of ‘robe’ in one shape or another. The song continues onto the rest of the family that raps about the rest of their extravagant gifts they received.
“I got Hulk hands! I got a tie! I got a copy of the Catcher In The Rye! I got a drum set! I got a phone! I got a pen!”
The list goes on and on as they relentlessly open gift after gift. You can see the mom’s Christmas spirit physically leaving her body. The one and only gift for her this Christmas was just the robe. Wiig watches her husband get a pizza oven outside, her daughter eye’s widened with her brand new hoverboard, and the son gets a drone. All very expensive and high-end in whatever capacity as they come.

This Is Great
The presents just keep getting more ridiculous as time goes by. Including the piano from the movie BIG and a vintage pinball machine. Christmas morning was truly turning into something else for everyone. As the camera pans back over to the mom as she’s visibly upset and desperately trying to enjoy her only Christmas present. Deciding to head toward the kitchen to make Christmas morning breakfast. Only to find out to further her surprise that her robe was also 40% off with the tag still on it.
Her eyes are completely dead and hollow of any real emotion with this discovery. Meanwhile, her husband is boasting of his new swords and brand new sunglasses. Finally, the rest of the family moves onto their stockings which are full to the brim with even more incredible gifts. However, mom’s stocking is completely empty. Mom’s stocking is only there for social media to let everyone know that she is still there too. Just as everyone’s seeming to finish with their Christmas morning rap, there are a few more presents glistening underneath the tree that are unclaimed.
The moment hope returns to mom’s face, it’s quickly stolen as the few remaining gifts are addressed to the dog. To rub salt into the wound, the dog was also given a robe for Christmas and it looks just as comfortable as hers if not more. The sorrow immediately returns to mom’s face as her family opts to take a selfie. Additionally, to show everyone just how successful their Christmas morning was to the whole world. Much to the mom’s dismay, being forced to show social media how exhausted and upset she is.
Don’t Forget Mom This Christmas Morning
As the SNL skit ends, it shows the family enjoying all of their new presents. However, mom is in the recliner with a much-needed very full glass of wine. Still deprived of so much wanted attention for all of the Christmas magic she put into making this Christmas morning. The screen begins to fade back with a message and a voiceover.
“Your mom does everything for your family. This year, get her more than one present. Moms like stuff too.”
The message couldn’t be more blunt and deliberate. People can take this however they may, but in light of the holiday spirit, get mom something more this year. Let all of your family know just how much you care and are thinking of them. Even if it means splurging just a little bit extra, everyone could use a little more holiday cheer this winter season.
