This Colorful Rosy Maple Moth Is an Eye-Catching Garden Visitor

Most people don’t like moths. I certainly don’t! They flap around aimlessly, often right in your face, just to annoy you! However, sometimes, we happen to see a moth that is as beautiful, if not more so, than their daytime counterparts, the butterfly! Meet the rosy maple moth. This pretty, colorful moth might just make you change your mind about how you feel about these furry, flappy critters! Insects with wings have a bad rap, but this cute fluffy moth will certainly make you smile.

Meet the rosy maple moth

Possibly the cutest and prettiest moth we’ve ever seen, the rosy maple moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) looks like something out of an episode of my little pony. Native to the eastern regions of North America, this cute little critter has a taste for maple trees. The leaves of maple trees are the diet rosy maple moth larvae; when they have reached their final stage as a moth, they stop eating. They also come in various shades and hues, which make them look like something out of a fantasy novel or some strange, alien planet![1]

These adorable moths are highly solitary, meaning they like to live alone. If you are going to be lucky enough to spot one of these pretty, fluffy, flying insects, it will probably be in the evening as that is when they are most active for a few hours at most. We think everyone should be lucky enough to spot one of these whimsical critters at least once! To make them even cuter, they have the cutest little leaf-life feelers![2]

Southern Flannel Moth

This unique fluffy moth is actually not your friend! The caterpillar of the Southern Flannel moth is one of the most poisonous and dangerous bugs in the United States! The hair on the Southern Flannel moth hides are poisonous, venom-filled spines.[4]
