Lonely Mom Is Praying over Sick Baby in Crib When a Man Walks up to Her Doorstep — a Short Story

Not everything is in our control. and sometimes things just don’t work out in the end. But, there are those moments where all hope has been lost, but our guardian angel sends us a solution. Just like in this story, which was inspired by readers at AmoMama, where it was originally published.

Not Good News

Emily sobbed while sitting in her doctor’s office. She held her baby boy, Jake, close to her. Emily listened as the Doctor told her there was nothing he could do for her or her child. She had no choice but to get Jake to a specialist. Unfortunately, she could not afford the flights to get there, let alone their fees. Her mother was also ill and she was not able to leave her on her own.

Unfortunately, Jake was not going to survive unless she managed to see one of the three specialists in the country. Her doctor wrote down their names and contact details for Emily anyway. Emily made her way back home, and, that evening when she put Jake to bed, she prayed and hoped for a miracle.

The Doctor

Meanwhile, a Doctor by the name of Carlisle Peters was catching a flight to New York where he was expected to accept a reward for his groundbreaking research. However, things were not going as planned for the unfortunate man. Halfway to his destination, the plane had to stop due to bad weather. He and the rest of the people on the flight were promised a hotel stay and a flight out the following morning.

Dr. Peters had no choice but to hire a car and drive to New York, the weather was awful but it was much better on the ground. He could make it in time he was certain. It would take him about four hours to get there.

The Storm

Carlisle booked his car and prepared to brave the long drive. It was 6 pm, so he should get to New York by 11 pm with the current weather conditions. He put his luggage in the trunk, put the hotel address on his GPS, and began his long drive.

The weather was a lot worse than he expected, he’d driven for over an hour and barely made any headway. He was now in a small town and there were no street lights and the roads were not paved. Suddenly, the car started making a sound, one that was not good at all. Carlisle drove a little more as he saw a light in the distance. He saw that the light was coming from a little house. The house was shabby and in need of repair. The car cut out and he slammed his hands onto the steering wheel in anger. He decided it may be a good idea to walk up to the house and see if they could assist him.

The Knock

Dr. Peters ran through the rain up to the house. He finally got to the door and noticed that it was basically falling apart. He wondered who lived inside, but knew he had no choice but to knock. Carlisle was starving, his rental car had broken down and he was never going to make it to New York to receive his award. Hopefully whoever lived in this house knew of a mechanic or could at least offer him something to eat.

He knocked on the door but nobody came to answer it. He was about to turn back and run back to his car when suddenly, a woman opened the door. She looked extremely surprised. She asked him what on earth he wanted and why he was there so late and in the rain.

Dr. Peters explained that he was traveling to New York and his car had broken down. He needed somewhere to rest until the storm blew over. The woman smiled and opened her door to let the soaking wet doctor inside. Relieved, Carlisle thanked the woman. They introduced themselves. The woman was Emily.

The Specialist

Carlisle looked around, while the house was shabby, it was a home. He felt very comfortable and Emily made him feel even more welcome. She made him some tea and gave him a bowl of soup. He was very grateful. The two started talking and she told him about her mother who had had a stroke. She was upstairs sleeping. She mentioned Jake, and how he did not have long to live because she could not afford to save him. This is when Carlisle noticed a paper stuck on Emily’s fridge door.

He asked Emily what the problem with Jake was, and she explained that he had a problem with his liver. Carlisle suddenly realized that he had been sent to this small town for a reason. Looking up at Emily he said to her: “Emily, I am one of the doctors whose names you have written on the note on your fridge”.

Emily went pale, she was very confused, why on earth was he in her home? How did this come to be? Was this that miracle she had prayed for earlier that evening?

The Miracle

Carlisle told Emily that he was Dr. Peters. The same Dr. Peters on her list. He started to cry, not something he did very often. Emily started to cry as she realized how slim the chance was of the very man who could save her son landing up on her doorstep was.

Carlisle decided to help Emily and her baby Jake for absolutely no charge. There was no way this was a coincidence. Sometimes things happen just as they should, and perhaps, guardian angels are real.

This story was inspired by an original piece of fiction that first appeared on AmoMama. Any similarities between this story and actual people is purely coincidental.
