45 Items That Belong to the Landfill and Not in Your Apartment

Over time, once cherished items used as decorative components in the home eventually become outdated and old-fashioned. Below are the outdated home trends and household items that belong in a landfill and not in the apartment.

Heavy Leather Seats

Once a sign of class; but its glory days are gone. The big leather seats of the ’90s have enjoyed popularity in its time. Now is the time to discard them and move on to new and elegant designs of seats.

Heavy Leather Seats

Besides the look, seats like these are not the most comfortable to sit on. They are hard and usually too thick.

Artificial Fireplace

Get rid of that plasterboard fireplace, and don’t feel sorry, after all, it’s fake. While a fake or artificial fireplace was a brilliant decoration idea some decades ago, times have changed and this artificial structure needs to be replaced with an actual fireplace.

Artificial Fireplace

So, demolish it, pack the debris away, and prepare to install an actual fireplace that is modern and useful. This new and real design will improve the look of the living room and remove any old fashion look the artificial type may give.

Soft Kitchen Corner

Unlike the smart and simple dining sets in recent years, these dining seats are just big and occupy too much space. In a modern home, it’s imperative to incorporate the use of recent designs because the once common dining seats usually made of leather are outdated and gives a dining area a busy look.

Soft Kitchen Corner

Dispose of these seats in the landfill and bring in a new and simple design. The new types of dining seats are usually much slimmer and occupy way less space, yet, comfortable and lovely.

Old Chandelier

No one can dispute the beauty a chandelier adds to the room especially when it lights up. The old chandelier design which is sometimes attached to a fan is outdated and although it was in vogue many years back, it’s no longer stylish.

Old Chandelier

To avoid ruining the Interior design of a home, trash this old type, and replace it with the modern types. The modern chandelier is appropriately designed to light up the room beautifully, giving it a cozy and bright outlook.

Plastic Bathroom Accessories

Gone are the good old days when plastic accessories of matching colors were in most homes. Whoever manufactured them must have sold big considering many homes had these sets in the bathroom decades ago.

Plastic Bathroom Accessories

Sadly, there is no place for these plastic accessories anymore. Although they may be cheap, it’s time to spend well on bathroom accessories instead of purchasing cheap plastic kinds. So, trash those old accessories and get new designs to give the bathroom a lovely and stylish touch.

Random Plastic as Trash Bin

There was no big deal using a random ample plastic container as a trash bin some years back. The home design in recent times, however, doesn’t blend with the use of plastics as a waste bin.

There are better designs manufactured to look formal, a lot more functional, and also befitting. The conventional plastic type of waste bin needs to leave the home and get replaced with the newer version designed to avoid having an odd-looking piece in a smart-looking space in a house.

Alarm Clock

Those small alarm clocks are common in bedrooms most times. Although useful, the alarm clock is quite outdated and needs to vacate the bedroom and find a place in the landfill. Don’t feel bad discarding this tool.

There are plenty of alternatives—all smartphones or tablets can perform the function of an alarm clock perfectly and even better. Some smart devices can even interact with the user—pointing out time for each activity. And oh! These devices can be extremely loud too.

Landlines

Landlines have been used for many generations and apart from keeping some locked in the basement (for historical collection), these communication machines need to go into extinction.

Discarding them wouldn’t hurt, since a vast majority of people now use mobile phones to communicate. So, kiss that lovely landline goodbye and stop having an old looking apartment. There are lots of available alternatives to place on shelves or tables a decorative piece. Use these fancy accessories and give the home a modern theme.

Stereo System

New technological innovations have mocked the old fashion stereo system. Of course, the system is loud and gives quality sound but since one is not at a party, the stereo occupies too much space for common house use.

As mentioned earlier, new speakers are now manufactured to give impressive sound despite their small size. Let go of those space-consuming stereo—let the living room look less busy, and replace it with simple and unnoticeable small speakers in use in recent years.

Mason Jars

Mason jars were the trend in the ’90s, they were used for many purposes. Some used them to store bars of soap, candles, and to keep food items in or out of a refrigerator. There still more functions that advertisers claimed the jar could perform.

Several households still use these jars instead of disposing of them. There are various new means of storage nowadays. This new method of storage is a lot fancier and befitting of modern home design. Talk of the fancy candle holder, or the smart boxes built to store food items.

Ferns

The idea of enjoying nature to the fullest, and bringing it indoors was in vogue in the ’80s—the idea was to bring ferns inside the house. For some, this meant placing the plant into almost everywhere room in the house—making the home look like a garden and all green during the day.

As beautiful as this can be, it’s best to move the plant outside and home and enjoy enough space within the home. This approach to design is no longer in vogue and screams outdated! Simply keep the plant in a garden, and use an alternative aesthetically pleasing object.

Bean Bags

A bean bag is a type of chair filled with air that is round in shape. It was quite common but now outdated. It is a casual seat much used for relaxation or when they get tired of a regular chair.

This chair has served its purpose and it’s time to let it go. The design is outdated and it belongs to the landfill now. There are more than enough relaxation chairs that are a lot more comfortable and look modern. This type of new chair fits into recent interior designs.

Flowers with Big Stalks

Common in the late ’80s and early ’90s is the act of plucking flowers with a long stalk and keeping them in a vase with water. That kind of idea is now old and no longer fascinating. Keeping such flowers in the home looks ordinary and outdated.

Options available now are better and more pleasing to the eye. Flower stores now sell bouquets—which are round, full and more presentable than flowers with long stalks can be. So, for anyone in the habit of putting flowers with long stalk as a decoration in the home—stop!

Synthetic Fruit

The idea of putting synthetic fruits on the table as decoration certainly was catchy in the ’90s. So many households copied the style and enjoyed the beauty while it lasted. This approach to the decoration of the interior of a home is old and odd.

No one goes about putting some fruits in a transparent bowl and placing it on the table or shelf and calls it decoration. It’s old fashioned and those synthetic fruits now belong in a landfill.

Lacy Tablecloth

Who uses table clothes these days, talkless of a lacy type? Well, if one was to go back in time, then the use of lace tablecloth wouldn’t seem so strange. The idea of great decor in the ’90s is a whole lot different than now.

Using a lace table cloth could count as the highest form of outdated design in this modern era. So put that lace cloth off the table and trash it. Enjoy the plain design of a center table without detracting from its beauty.

Window Valances

Window valances have the aura of the good old days. Commonly used in the upper part of a window, these pieces of short cotton are believed to add extra beauty to the windows.

It may have indeed served that purpose then, but now, using it will only give a living room an outdated outlook. The best option is to get those valances to the landfill and purchase long curtains that look elegant and modern—the room will be thankful and designers will give a thumbs up!

Beds with Platform

Some mysteries will remain unraveled till eternity; like whoever thought of putting a bed on a platform? What’s the elevation supposed to do? Despite being odd and meaningless, it trended for some unknown reasons in the ’70s.

Well, it has trended, now is the time to get it removed and disposed of in a landfill. It doesn’t belong to the apartment anymore. There are tons of designs for the bedroom now. Take a cue from them and stop making every night of going to sleep feel like a stage performance at the Grammys.

Mirrors Placed on a Ceiling

Having a mirror fixed on the ceiling of a room was another practice many found to be nice and chic. Even some celebrities had mirrors fixed on their ceiling as they joined the trend in those days.

That practice has enjoyed it’s time and now feels old fashioned. To keep up with the recent world-class interior decorations, the ceiling mirror needs to vacate the ceiling and stop making a room feel the owner has gone back in time to relive the past.

Mirror Fluorescent Lights

No one is saying the bedroom should not be well lit if the owner so wants, but there are better methods to achieve that than using those bright white Hollywood lights—they are simply blinding especially after waking up or coming in and eyes need to adjust sharply to the brightness.

Modern styles now have brown and amber colored lights fixed in rooms. These types give the room a warm, soft, and eyes friendly illumination. Why not schedule a time to rid the room of those white lights and replace them with contemporary lightning.

Thomas Edison Bulbs

Thomas Edison Bulbs are perfect when one is trying to create an antique design. Some restaurants trying to create an environment that will remind people of the ’90s also employ the use of these bulbs as parts of the items necessary.

So, unless one is trying to create a part of the house to look vintage, these bulbs do not have a place in contemporary home design. There are now chandeliers of various types that one can choose from to use as lightning in the home.

Tiffany Bed Lamp

Almost everyone has a bed lamp. There are plenty of designs and shapes depending on the choice of the user. The Tiffany lamp has an antique design and switch. Of course, it still serves the purpose for which it was intended but it looks no way near the recent types used to complement new interior decoration ideas.

Tiffany lamps have had their fair share of popularity, now is the time to dispose of this piece of the past and surf the internet for modern ones that are more captivating and fitted with better bulbs.

Shag Wooly Carpet

The soft, cushioning, and soothing feel of a shag carpet may be one of the reasons why many employed it use some decades ago. Coupled with the cozy feel it gives a room. One doesn’t have to try too much; it easy to love this carpet.

In terms of modern aesthetics, this carpet will get a low score when considering the stylish look, it can give a room. It feels hard but the era of the shag carpet is simply over and out. The overwhelming floor designs are brilliant alternatives.

Kitchen Tile Countertops

Oh, my my! This is so ’80ish! Tile on a countertop? It’s a no-no nowadays. We now live in the era of granite countertops and other impressive designs. There is no better place to dispose of this tile than the landfill.

Have a professional refurbish the kitchen space and get rid of the ancient tiles. Leave the ’70s behind and step fully into reality and start to enjoy the benefits of modern interior decorations. The kitchen also needs a touch of class—a look that rhymes well with the theme of the current style of home design.

Artificial Plants

Similar to synthetic fruits used as a design, artificial plants are also quite common. This approach to decorating the home should be abandoned considering how old fashioned it makes an interior look.

Gather every artificial plant in the house and head straight to a waste bin that will deliver those outdated objects to a landfill. There are plenty of alternatives to fake plants. Wooden sculptured objects and small metal designs are available in numerous forms for many who love to place accessories in the home.

Kitchen Sink Mat

The use of kitchen sink mat should have been retired a long time ago. Of course, it served its purpose; preventing noise during a wash, curbing the chirping of ceramic paint, and the coating on the sink.

Well, not to downplay the importance of these mats, but some kitchen sinks are now made from stones and materials which are resistant to scratch and chirping. For lovers of the common zinc types, it’s best to use colorless mats made from silicone. This way, the mat won’t be conspicuous.

Tufted Headboards

Huge tufted headboards were a thing for many. Its big size made many loves them and wanted to have them. Well, many did have them fixed and enjoyed the thrill of being part of a trend.

However, the era of tufted headboards is gone and now replaced by sophisticated iron headboards. It’s time to remove the tufted type—have it disposed of into the landfill and incorporate the new design into the bedroom.

Brass Accessories

Accessories of brass color may have been the glittering attention in the room. Some mirrors, fancy bowls, and decorative equipment that were plated with the bright yellow-golden color of brass now need to be replaced.

Modern interior decor now seems to be tilting towards the use of silver-colored material as decorative accessories. To blend with the future of interior decor, those brass accessories need to leave the apartment for a trash can—the end of an era. Now is the time to enjoy the new version of beautiful!

Shiny Mirror Furniture

It’s difficult to believe some people used shiny mirror furniture in the home. This type of furniture is present mostly in the room. It’s used as a table, cupboard, or any other object. The wood overlay of the furniture is a shiny type that can also work as a mirror.

Its material glitters and gives the room an overly bright look. In recent years this type of furniture is not only old fashioned but now considered ugly by designers. Get every piece of this furniture out of the home, and replace it with a new and subtle design.

The Wicker Seat

The wicker seat has a fancy and chic build; a major reason why many employ it use some years back. It did become so popular that a lot of households had at least one, while some had a set.

Despite the pretty look of the wicker chair, it has a frame that gets weak over time. And later, the chair becomes uncomfortable to sit on. Forget the fancy look, there are other types of wooden and well-structured chairs that are comfortable and sturdy. Trash the weak wicker, and get a modern and strong chair.

Cliche Moroccan Carpet

The Moroccan carpet has a unique patterned design that earned its popularity at a time. The beautiful carpet was the center of attraction in the room or wherever it was placed—it stands out and looks classy and captivating.

In the United States alone, millions of people purchased this beautiful piece, but like most trends, it faded. Some people traded these carpets for new types. Either make a trade or get this item to the landfill. Then, try out the new Persian rug common in some homes.

Matching Seats and Pillows

A trend in the past is to use pillows that have the same color as the chair in the living room. The matching color seemed fascinating in the past and many adopted this idea. It was fun while it lasted and now, there should be changes.

Modern designs frown at this idea simply because it gives a boring and dull outlook. Get new designs and colors of pillows and cast the chair color matching types into the landfill. Refine the home and have a fresh design.

Excessive Throw Pillows

It’s unexplainable how people got the idea of littering a chair with many pillows. Perhaps it was believed it gives the room a more beautiful room.

However, the idea only leaves the chair cluttered and with limited space to sit. Why not pick the lovely types and discard the rest? Don’t litter the room with ugly pillows. Let that seat have enough space, let it look smart, simple, and beautiful.

Old Computer Swiveling-Chair

The usually black colored swiveling computer chair may just be one of the outdated and obsolete fashioned items that to be discarded. Over time, due to the design of the chair and the length of use, it may start to sag and wear out.

Well, one can argue that not many people will see that dull-looking chair but then, it won’t give the needed comfort when in use. The worn structure will make sitting uncomfortable—affecting the back, neck, and causing pain at such parts of the body.

Sink Strainer

The kitchen gets filled with lots of items that make it look busy especially when making a meal. Adding a sink strainer to the endless list of a busy kitchen counter is needless. It detracts from the beauty of the space.

Most times, the color of this old object makes it all worse—a shining red or yellow object that contrasts with the metallic color of zinc. Save the face of the kitchen and get rid of this outdated item—let it go to the rightful place—the landfill.

Small Round Bedroom Beds

When recounting past designs, the round bed also comes to mind. Some years back, the round bed was considered a stylish accessory to put in a room alongside other types of small decorative objects.

It was fun while it lasted but its round shape takes more space and the bedding it uses is usually rare considering its shape. The recent rectangular bed shape in vogue is more appropriate and fitting for a bedroom layout. The round bed needs to go to the landfill while new bed furniture replaces it.

Vessels Not Designed for Feeding Pets

For pet lovers, it’s easy to run off to a store and purchase a fancy plate for a pet. However, since the focus most times is to purchase a lovely and well-designed plate, many do not notice how inconvenient the structure of some plates can be for pets.

Some plates have a structure that makes it difficult for a pet to feed well and comfortably. So, what to do? Simply discard these types of plates and purchase the wider types.

Cheap-Looking Interior Doors

Interior doors are as important as the main ones. However, not everyone seems to understand this—a reason why they purchase cheap and fancy doors. The downside is an outdated outlook—an interior with cheap doors looks outdated and of course, also looks cheap.

Additionally, professional home decor designers advise the use of quality and sturdy interior doors. If anything needs to be removed from the home, don’t hesitate to have these cheap doors removed permanently and replace them with modern types.

Cheap Scented Candles

Perhaps it’s the cheap price that entices many to purchase because it’s certainly not the strong pungent smell of these candles that prompts a purchase. These gel candles usually have an irritating smell that may also affect the quality of clean air.

Why not dispose of these gel candles and strive to purchase the quality types. And for users particularly about an excellent scent, modern perfume diffusers are excellent alternatives.

Wooden Toilets Seats

Wooden seats were in vogue in the ’90s and they should have ended then. It may have been fascinating then, but not anymore. There are even speculations that this type of toilet seat is not hygienic enough as compared to modern types.

Above all, design-wise, this wooden design is just so old and too outdated an item to be in 21st century home. It should be completely removed and discarded—it belongs to the landfill and not in the home.

Big Shelf for Computer Set

The computer set itself sounds so old and hopelessly outdated. The endless list of accessories and components all belong to the past as of the shelf that holds them. This type is always huge and placed in particular corners in most homes, but this ridiculous giant wood needs not to exist in the home for many reasons.

It takes up too much space, it’s ugly, and computers do not come in big sizes and lots of parts as before. A single table will do the job excellently, as most computers now come with lightweight and slim designs.

Wood Paneling

Wood paneling was popular decades ago, but in today’s modern aesthetic, it does little more than make a room appear both dated and even a bit dismal. Dark wood works well in many places, but when all of your walls are covered in wood paneling, it should come as no surprise how dark the room can get.

Wood paneling had its time, but today, it’s much better to send it to the landfill — where it can possibly be repurposed into something much more acceptable by modern décor standards.

Linoleum Flooring

As far as being a durable material is concerned, there’s not actually much wrong with linoleum flooring. But, aesthetically speaking, it just doesn’t look that good by today’s standards. Linoleum flooring with patterns on it evokes images of grandma’s house every single time.

So, if you’re looking to cut a nicer figure for your home, we’d recommend sending linoleum to the landfill and focusing on something both practical and attractive — such as tile or hardwood.

Terrazzo

Terrazzo was a popular material for construction in the United States for nearly 60 years, but that doesn’t mean it’s any good right now, as it makes people think of outdated office buildings more than anything else. It’s just so busy, and not in a subtle way.

Send it to the landfill with all the rest if you want to have a home that looks even remotely modern. Unless someone made a specific request, we can’t think of any home built in the past 30 years with terrazzo as the default.

Futons

Don’t get us wrong — futons have some practical use that anyone can appreciate. But, it’s really more fitting for a dorm where you can’t afford something better, as opposed to a piece of furniture you should have in your modern home.

Toss your old futon in a landfill and consider getting something nice and useful, like a modern sofa or loveseat. You can never really go wrong with those timeless classics.

Fast Furniture

The idea of fast furniture is appealing — it’s cheap and easy to put together. But, at the same time, you can never really escape that sense of cheapness when you see it in your home, and if you ever have a guest, they’ll probably wonder if you really couldn’t afford anything nicer.

So, we recommend sending this kind of fast, easy-to-assemble furniture to a landfill. Instead, try and repurpose and refurbish old, quality furniture that looks good and has timeless value.

Nautical Décor

There’s nothing wrong with loving the beach, the ocean, or boats. But, when your living room is swimming in anchors, rope, and other sailing memorabilia, the whole thing becomes a bit too on the nose and ventures into the realm of being cheesy.

Toss all of that into the landfill and give some other options a try — subtle things like beach or oceanic color palettes and the presence of driftwood or coral can get your point across without beating people over the head with it.

Tuscan Kitchens

We don’t actually dislike Tuscan kitchens, because we can certainly see the appeal in a dark, Italian villa. However, that’s just not really a popular look in kitchen design right now. Today’s kitchens aim to be spacious and open, providing an easy but attractive space to cook.

Obviously, you can’t throw an entire kitchen into a landfill, but you can get rid of some elements that are no longer trendy and begin the process of reinventing your kitchen to match what’s considered fashionable today.

Damask Wallpaper

Maybe you like Damask. There’s nothing wrong with that. But, can you think of a house made in the last 20 years with Damask wallpaper? Getting this busy with wall design is a relic of a bygone age, plain and simple.

In today’s home décor environment, people greatly prefer relatively simple wall design because it makes rooms feel less cluttered and oppressive. If you still have some Damask wallpaper lying about, you should probably throw it away.

Dusty Pastel Furniture

Dusty pastel furniture was quite popular for a time, but we aren’t exactly sure why this is the case. After all, such furniture has the dubious distinction of always looking a little dirty no matter how much you try to clean it.

Beyond that, the types of designs (often floral) that such furniture employs are way out of date compared to modern aesthetics. This is exactly the kind of item you should take to the landfill at your earliest opportunity.

Hollywood Mirror Lights

Hollywood mirror lights sound like they would be nice, but in reality, who wants to have that harsh glare in their face every single time they look in the mirror? Today, softer, more bearable lighting is often used in bathrooms.

Besides, even ignoring that, Hollywood mirror lights are just kind of gaudy. As you may have guessed, we’d sooner send this trend to the landfill than use it in our own home, and you should feel that way too.

Plaid Home Décor

There’s nothing wrong with plaid clothing (in moderation!), but we can’t believe people thought plaid wallpaper was a good idea at some point. No one wants to feel like they’re stepping into a kaleidoscope when entering a room, so ditch the plaid wallpaper and upholstery when you can.

Besides, the landfill could use a bit of color, so they would probably appreciate all of your plaid donations — whilst also wondering why you had so much of it in the first place.

Pine Furniture

Pine is a very nice wood, especially when it comes to accents. But, when nearly every piece of wooden furniture in the house is made of pine, it gets old and fast. The ’80s and ’90s had a huge problem with overusing pine for furniture.

Vertical Blinds

Is there anything good to say about vertical blinds? They’re annoying to open and close, and they’re pretty unattractive, especially in a home. They’re more fitting for an office building, and even then they don’t look good.

If, for whatever reason, you have these in your house, send them to your nearest landfill immediately and find some nice curtains for your windows instead. Trust us — it will be infinitely better.

Glass Blocks

Glass blocks had their uses — they allowed light to get into the bathroom without risking your privacy. But really, if you walked into a ba

They’re just one of those things that scream ‘outdated relic of old home design.’ For that reason, they really don’t belong in any house that’s trying to pass itself off as modern.

Popcorn Ceilings

If there was one aspect of a house that instantly took you back to your childhood, it would probably be popcorn ceilings. We all forgot about them for a time, but we all have some weird nostalgic memory of the way ceilings used to be.

That’s exactly why you should get rid of them if you still have such ceilings today. They’re outdated — no two ways about it. There’s just no place for such weirdly textured ceilings in modern home design.

Beds with Ruffled Skirts

There was a time (the ’80s) where just about everything that could be ruffled was ruffled. Some of those things are acceptable today, but one that really got the boot was ruffled bed skirts. Something about them just screams ‘antiquated.’

If you still have these in your house, you should send them to a landfill so they finally fade into obscurity. Go for today’s more minimalistic design, with simple bed skirts — or no bed skirts at all.

Huge, Heavy Headboards

Having a headboard for your bed isn’t bad, but some of them are too over the top. The age of the absolutely massive, heavy headboard is long gone, and if you have one in your bedroom now, it just looks clunky and clumsy.

Send that huge piece of wood to the landfill and give your bedroom wall some space! The bed already takes up a large part of most rooms, so don’t make it any more of a problem than it already is!

Doilies

Want everyone to assume that you’re a grandma, regardless of your age or appearance? Just lay out some doilies on your table. No one will think you’re hip or trendy at that point. Nothing against doilies, but they just scream ‘antique.’

It’s the landfill for them too — if you’re smart. Well, you don’t have to throw them away, but we certainly wouldn’t recommend putting them on display when you have guests over, all things considered.

Floral Patterns

Flowers are beautiful, but that doesn’t mean you need to cover everything in your house in depictions of them. Too much of something like that just gets tacky. Nowadays, home décor is all about subtlety and showing what you love without beating people over the head with it.

So if you still have floral patterns on curtains, upholstery, carpets, or anything else, consider cutting back a bit and making your passion just a little less oppressive to everyone who enters your house.

Zebra Print

Regardless of how popular some things were for a time, you can’t deny how gaudy they are now, and how tacky they always were. Zebra print just doesn’t look good, period. The more you use it, the worse it gets, but we can’t really condone it at all.

If you have zebra print rugs or pillowcases, you should send those to the landfill and do yourself a favor. Everyone who has to look at your interior décor will thank you when you replace them with something else.

Curio Cabinets

The idea of displaying one’s prized possessions for everyone to see was pretty popular in prior decades. But, nowadays, it just seems kind of silly and overinflated. Let’s be honest — most people don’t care what you have in a curio cabinet, and at that point, it’s just taking up space.

Keep your prized possessions somewhere that’s truly safe, and where they’re easily appreciated by you. There’s no need to brag about what you own when inviting someone into your home.

Matched Wallpaper and Carpeting

As you may have surmised from this article so far, modern aesthetic demands that you mix and match complementary designs, rather than making everything in a room uniform. Having a room with matching wallpaper and carpeting is just overpowering and makes everything feel way too busy.

Where do you even look? You can keep one or the other, but definitely choose either the carpet or that wallpaper and send it to the landfill. Honestly, though, you could probably stand to get rid of both.

Conversation Pits

The idea of a cool little spot your guests can gather in the living room to hang out sounds cool on paper but think about all the drawbacks of having a huge hole in your living room floor. You can’t put anything else there if you rearrange the room, and it would be a nightmare to clean.

Now, you can’t really send that to the landfill as it were, but you should take whatever steps you need to turn that conversation pit into normal floor space. Send whatever comes out of that renovation to the landfill.

Wooden Countertops

Wooden countertops are already something you are unlikely to see in any home built in the past 30 years, but if you happen to also own brightly colored cabinets, congratulations — you’re living in a ’70s sitcom.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of both. There are many nicer materials you can make countertops out of these days, so pick literally any of them in favor of your wooden countertops. It’ll look much more modern that way.

Shiplap

Shiplap just isn’t the type of trend that ages well. Heck, it’s not even that old, but it’s already going the way of the dodo if you know how to pick up on what trends are going to be timeless and which ones are just fads.

Shiplap is just the latter. If you have any, just go ahead and send it to the landfill now instead of waiting for it to be absolutely outdated in another year or two. Beat those home designers to the punch!

Bed Canopies

Bed canopies may seem appealing, but they take up a whole lot of space in your room and go a long way in making your bedroom feel more claustrophobic and cluttered. Not to mention it feels a little gratuitous and unnecessary at some point.

It’s so old school it dates back to entirely different eras, but it’s not timeless like some other design trends, so that’s actually a big problem. Just send it to the landfill.

Fuzzy Toilet Covers and Rugs

Aside from being very outdated in terms of fashion, we feel the need to express how downright nasty it is to have such fabrics near the toilet. Do you ever wonder why mold was way more prevalent in bathrooms in the past?

They look bad and they are bad for your health, so there’s truly no reason to keep these fuzzy decorations in your bathroom. Seriously, you do not want to know how much easier it is for germs to survive on those surfaces.

Furniture With Tassels

Interior design just doesn’t really do tassels anymore. Doesn’t matter what piece of furniture is in question, tassels just aren’t cool right now, and probably never will be again. If you have a couch with tassels on it, you need a new couch.

A landfill is a perfect place to part ways with your old tasseled couch. Don’t get too sentimental about it — you can definitely find a much nicer replacement for it just about anywhere that sells furniture.

Sleigh Beds

Most people don’t realize that beds have embraced minimalistic design as much as every other part of the house. Unless you sleep in a huge bedroom that needs huge things just to feel occupied, do you really want a sleigh bed taking up a ton of space?

Just get rid of it. It’s not like the huge sleigh-shaped frame actually helps you sleep better. Really, it just takes up a bunch of space that could be used for a nice picture or something.

Wall to Wall Carpeting

Carpet has its benefits, but it has a ton of downsides too. Namely, it’s super hard to keep clean, and when it does get dirty, it’s a nightmare to take care of that problem. This is a huge problem in frequently-traveled areas, like the living room.

Carpet from one wall to the other just isn’t practical or trendy anymore, and the better choice is to use hardwood floors with thoughtfully placed rugs when you need them.

Gold Framed Mirrors

Some things that were considered normal in the past are just kind of gaudy now. Gold framed mirrors are one of them. Are those huge, bulky frames really doing anything useful? And it’s not like it’s real gold, so the whole thing seems pretentious.

Send that old mirror to the landfill and get one that doesn’t try so hard to be noticed. A mirror isn’t actually supposed to be what you care about when looking into one.

Cat Clocks

Some trends last forever, while others are just fads. Let’s be honest here — having clocks on your wall at all is a pretty antiquated notion in interior design these days, but cat clocks take that to an entirely different level. Anyone will recognize them as a relic of a different time.

No, they aren’t cute. In fact, they’re a little creepy when you think about it. Send it to the landfill and rely on digital time like everyone else does these days. We all have phones, right?

Cream White Outlet Covers

These types of things are still used today, but usually, they’re a much cleaner white than the outlet covers of yore, which always looked like they were dirty. If you still have those old outlet covers, we suggest getting rid of them.

After all, who wants something that looks perpetually dirty in their house? Even if they aren’t truly dirty, that’s not a particularly desirable thing for anyone, whether they’re the type to entertain guests or not.

Water Beds

A fad that was briefly cool but faded into obscurity remarkably quickly, we would honestly be surprised if anyone reading this article owned an honest-to-goodness water bed in this day and age. They’re hard to maintain and make a huge mess even on good days.

Seriously, if you are actually sleeping on a water bed right now, take it to your nearest landfill and go find a normal mattress. Maybe a Tempur-Pedic or something?

Inflatable Furniture

The idea of furniture that’s mobile and easily set up is great on paper, but here’s the thing about inflatable furniture — one, it’s not pretty. Two, you don’t need mobile furniture in very many cases.

Three, when you do need it, lawn chairs exist and are way easier to use. So really, there’s no reason to keep inflatable furniture if you happen to have it, even in something like a kid’s room. Unless they just really like it, for some reason.

Filter Jug
